Cohesion/Coherence Group Practice Questions Directions: Each group will receive a sample paragraph written by one of your classmates. Read over your sample as a group. Then, answer the following questions. 1. COHERENCE: Does the topic sentence clearly forecast the scope and content of the paragraph? If not, how could the writer revise in the topic sentence or change the paragraph’s content? 2. COHESION: Find an example of where the writer successfully used a cohesion strategy between sentences (same subject, topic-handoff, or preview and shift). Underline the example you chose and explain which strategy it uses and why the use is effective. 3. COHESION: Find an example of where cohesion breaks down between sentences. If all sentences appear cohesive, find an example of where the existing cohesion between sentences could be further enhanced or clarified, such as with a transition word/phrase. Circle the example you chose and explain why it lacks cohesion or could be more cohesive. Then, explain how the writer could revise to make the sentences more cohesive. 4. COHERENCE: How coherent was the paragraph overall? Remember that coherent paragraphs will: • Have a topic sentence that accurately reflects the scope and content of the paragraph • Have sentences that build meaningfully on the topic sentence • Maintain cohesion between sentences • Present sentences in a logical order
