Competencies Made Easy 80 Gasy @ Gamecock could do it —_ Arts & Er Science, Technology & Toll a7 Cultural Awareness ——__—, Additional etre Help Docsity.com Arts & Humanities • Demonstrate an understanding of the arts and humanities in historical and cultural contexts. A quality Arts and Humanities artifact could come from: • Course work from an arts or humanities class • Critical analysis on campus art exhibits (Lee Gallery Art Exhibit ) • A critical analysis from a play …But it must demonstrate historical and cultural contexts! You can ALSO use an original creative work but it must include an artist statement explaining how it demonstrates historical and cultural contexts! Title: A Discussion of the Effects of the Civil War on America Rationale- This paper meets this competency because it discusses the civil war within historical and cultural context……. PROBLEM- This is Social Science, not Arts and Humanities. Mentioning a historical event that affected people does not demonstrate an understanding of AH from a historical and cultural context. COMMON ERROR… Docsity.com Critical Thinking • Demonstrate the ability to critically analyze the quality and utility of knowledge gained throughout the undergraduate experience and apply this knowledge to a wide range of problems. • Some piece of evidence that you accomplished something that you could not have done as a freshmen • Knowledge that you gained since being an undergraduate For example: You can write about an internship. …But you must explain what was gained through the internship process and how you apply this knowledge to your life at Clemson, home, or anywhere else. Title: My study notes for my final exam at college Rationale- This document shows my study notes from CU499, the hardest class in my major. It shows all my knowledge gained throughout my time at Clemson…… PROBLEM- A study guide does not work or show a deep analysis of knowledge gained throughout the undergraduate experience…even if it is your hardest class in college. COMMON ERROR… Docsity.com Cross Cultural Awareness • Demonstrate the ability to critically compare and contrast world cultures in historical and/or contemporary contexts. • A quality Cross-Cultural Awareness artifact must compare different world cultures. For example: You cannot use a paper about the differences in culture between The Northeast and the South. Keep in mind, this artifact must demonstrate a comparison between World Cultures! (Two different countries) For example: You can use a paper that compares the French- Quarter of New Orleans to Paris. Keep in mind, it must compare and contrasts these two different world cultures! Title: My Study Abroad Time in Belgium Rationale- This artifact looks at my time in Belgium during my junior year and describes the culture and traditions of Belgium….. PROBLEM- This artifact only discussed the culture and customs of ONE country. You need to compare and contrast multiple aspects of culture of at least TWO WORLD cultures. This can be corrected by adding some comparison and contrast of these aspects of Belgian Culture to another culture, such as that of the US. COMMON ERROR… Docsity.com Ethical Judgment • Demonstrate an ability to identify, comprehend, and deal with ethical problems and their ramifications in a systematic, thorough, and responsible way • Make sure your artifact covers a debatable ethical issue. • This issue should have some gray area. • It should not be just your opinion… the issue must have facts and research to back up both sides of the issue. • You must show opposing arguments! For example: You cannot use an opinion piece! • Why? Because we don’t want to see a discussion of a situation! For example: you cannot use a review of a seminar. • Why? Because you must demonstrate multiple points from both sides of the argument. Seminars tend to be a single person’s perspective. • We do not recommend using artifacts from 100 level courses. • Why? Because these artifacts typically lack evidence of logical reasoning. Title: Why Drunk Driving is Bad Rationale- This paper discusses the ethics of drunk driving….. PROBLEM- You cannot choose something that only has one side of an argument. If there is no alternative argument (pro or con) to the topic you have chosen, then it cannot work for this competency. Unless people themselves are drunk, nobody is clamoring for the legalization of drunk driving. COMMON ERROR… Docsity.com • Competency: A group of behaviors that demonstrate an understanding • Look at the competency requirements first, THEN look at past assignments from class. • Do not assume competency titles correspond to class names. o Ex: MTHSC 206 Project may not fulfill the Mathematics competency • It’s okay to post two artifacts for each competency for your first submission. • Try to avoid using power points as artifacts because bullet points are not fully developed ideas or sentences. • If you use a case study, make sure you attach the case study. • If you use group work, make sure you state that it was a group assignment and also state your role in the group. • EVERY competency is being graded on communication, grammar and proofreading! • You will receive a 1-4 score on all tagged artifacts, 4 being the best. 2 and above are permissible. • Cite your sources. Your artifact will be rejected if sources are not cited. Helpful Hints Docsity.com FAQ • Q: What if I don’t know what to tag for a competency? • A: We created a General Education inventory so professors can double check to see if their classes are satisfying the competencies. • Q: What if I have a paper that demonstrates more than one competency? • A: You can tag one artifact with multiple competencies, but make sure the tags are relevant to the competencies. • Q: Is there a right or wrong way to create an ePortfolio? • A: If all competencies are tagged with relevant artifacts, then your ePortfolio is complete.
