Week 5 NATIONAL ARTIST AND THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS TO PARTICULAR AREAS ( Visual Arts, Literature, Film, Broadcast Art, Architecture, Fashion Design and Allied Arts ) 4 The visual arts are art forms that create works that are primarily visual in nature, such as ceramics, drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, design, crafts, photography, video, film making and architecture. These definitions should not be taken too strictly as many artistic disciplines (performing arts, conceptual art, textile arts) involve aspects of the visual arts as well as arts of other types. Also included within the visual arts are the applied arts such as industrial design, graphic design, fashion design, interior design and decorative art. LIST OF PHILIPPINE NATIONAL ARTISTS FOR VISUAL ART Fernando Amorsolo (1972) This man is the country’s first ever National Artist. He is known for infusing lighting technique into his works, making most of his designs bright and sunny. His significant works are Planting Rice, Dalagang Bukid, The Mestiza and Maiden in a Stream among others. Carlos “Botong” Francisco (1973) Botong is the poet of Angono whose eye for structure, choice of color, and folk values are so distinct in his art. For nearly three decades, he painted murals showing the historical past of the Philippines. Most of his subjects depict the life in his hometown and highlights the lives of the farmers and the fishermen. His major works include Blood Compact, The Martyrdom of Rizal, Bayanihan, Sandugo, Portrait of Purita, First Mass at Limasawa and The Invasion of Limahong. Guillermo Tolentino (1973) This artist is well-known UP School of Fine Arts professor. He brought The Bonifacio Monument into life. He also designed the gold and bronze medals for the Ramon Magsaysay Award and did the seal of the Republic of the Philippines. He was also the one who created the UP Oblation, which became the representation of the academic freedom of the university. Napoleon Abueva (1976) He is not only the Father of Modern Philippine Sculpture but also is the youngest recipient of this award. He also used many forms of materials in his craft like mixing different materials like metal and stone in making sculptures. Among his notable works are Nine Muses, and The Transfiguration. Victorio Edades (1976) Edades is tagged as the Father of Modern Philippine Painting. He is known for his dark and subdued shades in his art pieces. Depicted in his works were the hardships in the lives of the laborers and the lower class in the society. 5 Vicente Manansala (1981) He is an alumnus of Fine Arts course at the University of the Philippines. Indeed, his works mirror reality that reels on the verge of perception. He contributed in the modernism of Philippine visual arts by his style of transparent cubism. Unlike the usual Paris cubism, he does not fragmentize human figures but instead he reorganized forms in transparent planes. Among his noteworthy works include Mother and Child, A Cluster Nipa Hut, Nude, Via Crucis, Market Vendor and I Believe in God. Cesar Legaspi (1990) This artist is the Philippines’ first neo-realist. He indeed used the geometric technique in his daring-themed arts. He indigenized cubism and produced artworks showing local temperaments. Some of his major art pieces are The Beggars, The Stairway, The Survivor, Gadget 1 and II, Flight Ovary, Idols of the Third Eye among others. Hernando Ocampo (1991) Ocampo is a self-taught painter. In particular, his arts portray harsh social truths to give knowledge after the Second World War. It was his abstract painting that significantly contributed to the Philippine Modern Art. His works proved that abstract and non- traditional style of painting can also result to nationalistic art. His major artworks were Genesis, Calvary, Slum Dwellers, Nude with Cradle and Flower, The Resurrection, Fiesta, etc. Arturo Luz (1997) As a painter, a sculptor, and a designer for over 40 years, he elevated the Filipino aesthetic vision through serious expressions and forms in his art. He is known for his minimalist paintings and sculptures which exude sophisticated simplicity. His major paintings include Procession, Bagong Taon, Vendedor de Flores, Skipping Rope, Candle Vendors, Night Glows, Grand finale and Cyclist Series. Jeremias Elizalde Navarro (1999) He is famous as a versatile and expert painter and sculptor. In fact, he devoted four decades for visual arts. As a painter he created both abstract figure paintings using oil and watercolour. The prominent elements in his abstract works were its geometric forms and spontaneous strokes. As a sculptor, he was popular for his masks, carved in hardwood with combined features of human and animal. Among his remarkable works are I’m Sorry Jesus I Can’t Attend the Mass, Grand Prix, Homage to Dodgie Laurel, A Flying Contraption for Mr. Icarus, The Seasons and All Because of Humpy Dumpy’s Fall. Ang Kiukok (2001) 8 • Lino Brocka He was an award winning director who used “freedom and expression” in his works. He was a social activist that gave hope to the marginalized sector of the society through his productions. Some of the notable films he produced include Wanted: Perfect Mother, Tubog sa Ginto, Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang, Sa Kuko ng Liwanag, Bona and Makiusap Ka sa Diyos , among others. • Ishmael Bernál The so called “ Genius of the Philippine Cinema”. His works were reflections of the existing realities of the Philippine society and the struggle of the Filipino people. The significant element in Bernal’s works was their symbolic details. Among his masterpieces are Himala, Nunal sa Tubig, Pahiram ng Isang Umaga, and Broken Marriage. • Gerardo de León He served as a piano player for silent movies and this became his training ground in the field of cinema. He was a medical practicioner by profession but because of his burning passion for cinema, he chose to pursue a career in directing films. His classic productions are Noli Me Tangere, El Felibusterismo, Daigdig ng mga Api, and Sisa. • Eddie S. Romero He was a screen playwright, producer and a film director. His first script Ang Maestra led him to write more screenplays like Anong Ganda Mo, So Long America, Isumpa Mo Giliw, Mameng Iniibig Kita and Hindi Kita Malimot. His first movie as a full-fledged director was the movie Kamay ng Diyos produced in 1948 under Sampaguita Pictures. He won the best director award for film, Ang Prinsesa at ang Pulubi in 1951. • Fernando Poe Jr. Ronald Allan K. Poe, popularly known as Fernando Poe Jr was a legendary icon in the Philippine cinema. Apart from being an actor, FPJ was also a writer, a director and a producer. He starred in numerous movies like Ang Probinsiyano, Ang Batang Maynila, Mga Alabok sa Lupa, Totoy Bato, etc. He also played as a fantasy hero on films Ang Alamat, Ang Panday, and Ang Pagbabalik ng Lawin. • Manuel Conde Manuel Pabustan Urbano, popularly known as Manuel Conde, started his journey in the world of film as an apprentice in Philippine Films. He later on , became the assistant director for sarswela film entitled Giliw Ko of the LVN Pictures. He established the MC Production and produced movies which mirrors and critiques the Filipino tradition, customs, values, and culture. Conde introduced local cinema to an international audience. He directed and starred on two movies focusing on world history and literature figures which were entitled Genghis Khan and Sigfredo. These movies became popular internationally that established the presence of the country’s local cinema all over the world. 9 • Kidlat Tahimik Eric Oteyza de Guia (born October 3, 1942 in Baguio City, Philippines), better known as Kidlat Tahimik (a Tagalog translation of "silent lightning"), is a film director, writer and actor whose films are commonly associated with the Third Cinema movement through their critiques of neocolonialism. For his contributions to the development of Philippine independent cinema, he was recognized in 2018 as a National Artist of the Philippines for Film - a conferment which represents the Philippine state's highest recognition for artists. One of the most prominent names in the Filipino film industry, he has garnered various accolades locally and internationally, including a Plaridel honorarium for independent cinema. He is dubbed by fellow filmmakers and critics as the "Father of Philippine Independent Cinema". • Lamberto V. Avellana He was called “The Boy Wonder of the Philippine Cinema “ because he was the first director who utilized the motion picture camera which influenced filmmaking techniques. “Sakay” was the first film he directed which won the Best Picture of 1939. This movie started his remarkable journey to the film industry. His award winning films are Badjao, Anak Dalita, and Kalderong Pilak, among others. ARCHITECTURE, DESIGN, AND ALLIED ARTS The architecture of the Philippines reflects the country’s complex cultural identity. First colonized by Spain, America, and finally Japan, Filipino artists joke that they spent 400 years in a convent, five in a prison camp, and 45 in Hollywood. This complexity finds its creative expression in the work of these architects, whose vision simultaneously captured the country’s history while looking towards the region’s future. Nakpil • most prominent in Nakpil’s architectural design were the strength, function, and aesthetic value • reflections of the Philippine traditional and cultural heritage • Avenue Theater and Hotel Building, Quezon Institute building, International Eucharistic Congress Altar, Quiapo Church ( renovated ) Ildefonso P. Santos • famous landscape architect known for landscaping plazas, gardens, hotels, playgrounds, commercial centers, housing projects, parks, etc. • he introduced outdoor shopping concept through his design of the Makati Commercial Complex where he incorporated fountains, sculptures and landscape walks • Laguna Caliraya Lake Resort, Loyola Memorial Park, Eternal Gardens Memorial Park, Tagaytay Highland Resort, among others Jose Maria V. Zaragoza • architectural structure was a mixture of modern and traditional design • most of his works involved religious architectures like the Santo Domingo Church and Convent, St. John Bosco Parish Church, Pius XII Center, Convent of the Pink Sisters, San Beda Convent, etc. • he also designed secular buildings which include the Meralco Building, Philippine Airlines Building, Philippine Banking Corporation Building and he was one of the architects who designed the National Library Ramon Valera (Fashion Design) • fashion designer who innovated the Philippine terno • transformed the components of baro’t saya into a single clothing 13 A.
