THE EFFECTIVENESS OF EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES ON GRADE 11 STUDENTS’ MOTIVATION I. Research Abstract Extracurricular activities help students to be engaged with their environment and attain a high sense of oneself, but it is not accessible for all educational institutions. This research may help schools in offering various extracurriculars for students as it shows to have a positive effect in elevating their motivation in succeeding academically. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of engaging in extracurricular activities on Grade 11 student’s motivation. Having good grades, higher educational attainment, better social skills, regular attendance and greater involvement in the school community will be evaluated within Grade 11 students who participate in extracurriculars and those who do not. This can further analyze whether these activities give a cooperative environment for the students and offer encouragement for them to stay in school. Additionally, these opportunities enhance a student’s academic and life skills that they can utilize for future endeavors. This research promotes more activities that should be given to students as it increases their motivation, with that, teachers and parents should continue to persuade learners to engage in extracurricular activities. II. Background and Purpose Student motivation is one of the aspects of implementing quality education throughout the curriculum (Palmer, 2007). Hence why motivation is perceived as a crucial part of a students’ perception of their academic accountabilities. However, (Usher and Kober, 2013) mentioned how motivation may decrease as school reforms focus more on standards and tests. Likewise, the purpose of this research is to establish the advantages of extracurricular activities as an effective way to motivate students in senior high school. As stated by (McNeal, 1995), extracurricular activities give a cooperative environment for the students and offer encouragement for them to stay in school. Likewise, this research strives to conceptualize the causes of Grade 11 students doing extracurricular activities, which may be a foundation to promote more activities that could strengthen students’ motivation. According to (Wilson, 2009) Better grades, higher standardized test scores, higher educational attainment, more regular attendance at school, and a higher sense of oneself are all advantages of participating in extracurricular activities. Extracurricular activity participation among students aids in character development. They also have opportunities to pursue personal interests and identify their strengths and weaknesses, which is crucial during the adolescent stage of self-exploration (Fredricks & Eccles, 2008). (Knifesend & Graham, 2012) Extracurricular activities foster teamwork, communication, relationships, and a sense of belonging, all of which aid in social development and academic success. Several Grade 11 students feel drained due to the amount of school work, keeping up with past lectures and other stress factors. These can affect their performance in school, with that, extracurricular activities serve as a productive break for students (Good School, 2022). The number of out-of-school youth in the country has increased because of personal matters and lack of interest (PSA, 2021). This study explores the idea of whether extracurricular activities are an effective strategy in motivating students to improve their overall outlook in school. Results of this study can improve the country’s education system as it presents other methods for learners to hone their skills even outside the classroom and explore various interests that can still benefit their future careers. Moreover, it can increase the enrollment rate of the country as it allows students to be more active in school and improve their academic performance. III. Statement of the Problem This study aims to recognize the functions and relations of extracurricular activities as an effective motivation for Grade 11 students. Specifically, this study aims to answer the following questions: 1. Is there any significant function between extracurricular activities and the motivation of Grade 11 students? 2. Can extracurricular activities be considered a big factor that can elevate the motivation of Grade 11 students? 3. Is there any significant difference between the quality of motivation of Grade 11 students with extracurricular activities and students who do not take extracurriculars?
