EDTC 100 G Nikki DeGraw Philosophy of Education October 16, 2008 Philosophy of Education Lifelong learning is the concept that "it's never too soon or too late for learning.” The philosophy of lifelong learning is attitudinal; that one can and should be open to new ideas, decisions, skills or behaviors. Lifelong education is a pedagogy often accomplished through continuing education, home schooling, training workshops, certifications, or correspondence courses. It also includes postgraduate programs for those who want to improve their qualifications, bring their skills up to date or retrain for a new line of work. With the knowledge we gain throughout our lives, we are able to teach others. A prime example of life long-learning is teachers and students. When a teacher lectures to a student, they are not only educating them for that grade level, but the student will be able to later apply that knowledge learned in upper grade levels and later on in life. Today, teachers play a very crucial role in society. They are the educators for the future of our country and future generations. The knowledge students learn in their early years of life is the basis for their future; whether their future be college or becoming the president of a major corporation, it all starts with an education. The relationship a teacher has with students is very important. Teachers should be good role models and set a good example for their students, and this is especially important for teachers teaching students of younger ages. The relationship should be kept professional, but there should also be a balance where the student can feel comfortable enough to be able to confront the teacher with a problem that may be occurring outside the classroom. It is important to be open- minded, trustworthy, and dedicated. Overall, a teacher’s commitment to students is extremely important. Reflection is what allows us to learn from our experiences: it is an EDTC 100 G Nikki DeGraw Philosophy of Education October 16, 2008 assessment of where we have been and where we want to go next. There are advantages to reflective practice for everyone. It can help identify strengths, enhance them, and thus affect student learning in an even greater way. A reflective practitioner is one who uses their life experience to solve problems. When a teacher educates their students, they can use both their knowledge and life experiences to provide each student with an optimal education. As an educator, it is important to constantly evaluate and reevaluate content, objectives, instruction, and assessment. Reflecting can help a teacher record successful and unsuccessful practices, explore feelings in regards to subjects and students, continually question thought processes, and the reasoning behind those chosen processes. It is important for a teacher to reflect on what they are teaching students because teaching is repetitive, and it is important that the teacher is making an impact on students while teaching various materials. If a teacher is not positively impacting or doing a good job of educating students, the teacher can assess what is being taught and make various modifications to the teaching strategy being used to better educate. For example, if reflecting on a lesson given, you could look over student assessments or ask for feedback from those who were presented to. Did the students study or fail to do the homework assignments? Was your lesson difficult to grasp or was your exam too difficult? Reflecting will help you summarize and learn from the past to better help you prepare for future lessons. Technology has begun to play a huge role in society, not only in a positive manner but also a negative one. You now can teach students by using computers, cameras, calculators, or over head projectors. Technology helps clarify certain lessons and projects and can be much more time efficient. Technology has made learning fun and easier for students. Unfortunately, technology can also make a student lazy.
