Chapter XII Global City and Bonifacio Global City (BGC) Manuscript Intended for: Students Modality: Blended/Flexible Learning Module No./Subject: 12, Contemporary World Allotted time: 3 hours, 12" week I. Learning Outcomes This lesson intends to prepare students to: 1. Identify the attributes of a global city; 2. Analyze how cities serve as engines of globalization; 3. Describe Clark Global City and Bonifacio Global City; 4. Discuss what makes a city a global city; and 5. Negotiate using pure capitalism as basis. IL Learning Management System Lesson 1: Suggested Activity/Activities Activity 1- Commonialities of Cities Challenge all students to give commonalities of cities very much affected by Covid-19 pandemic. New York, London, Tokyo, Seoul, Paris, Beijing, and other cities similarly situated. Most probably, population density will emerge as common answer. Connect population density with the present disruption by asking evil of community transmission. Discipline of people, effective governance, full support of the governed, and compassion of officials manning government are some of expected answer being part of right formula. Activity 2- City as Hub of Economic Activity Randomly, call some students to give capital city of some countries like: Philippines, Japan, Canada, Australia, Germany, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, China, etc. Give them additional points. Ask them, what is the hub of abovementioned economic activities? Ask them to describe the infrastructure development of these cities? The urban planning? How about the transportation? The communications and telecommunication facilities? Lesson 2: Integration Topic 1- City as Focal Point of Development Cities are major beneficiaries of globalization. It is the focal point of country’s development. Sir Patrick Geddes in 1915 used the term “world city” referring to an established city heavily involved in global trade. He was known worldwide for his innovative thinking in the fields of urban planning and sociology. Saskia Sassen in 1991 used the term “global city” rather than “mega city”. Known as outstanding Dutch-American sociologist with lots of i z contribution through her analyses of globalization and human migration. ‘According to Sassen: a global city is the only international networking forum where city leaders, mayors, political leaders and city executives can share strategies, methods and concrete solutions to help them implement their vision of a sustainable city and metropolitan region. She added, that a global city also called “world city” or sometimes alpha city or world center, is a city which is a primary node in the global economic network. The concept comes from geography and urban studies and the idea that globalization is created, facilitated, and enacted in strategic geographic locales according to hierarchy of importance to the operation of the global system of finance and trade. The most complex node is the “global city” which links binding it to other cities having a direct and tangible effect on global socio-economic affairs. The Institute for Urban Strategies in Tokyo ranked global cities in 2017 based on six categories namely, economy, research and development, cultural interaction, livability, environment, and accessibility. Topic 3- Global cities as engines of globalization The impact of globalization on economic growth is certainly purchase an overwhelming of goods that were manufactured in one place. Most often, cities are regarded as engines of economic growth without underscoring the plight of residents within such city. Likely expected in normal set-up that they would directly be benefited from potentials dividends but the fact remains that one in seven of the world’s people evidently live in poverty. The urban poor often lack access to basic infrastructure and services. In urban areas, it is more cost-effective to meet many basic needs than it is in the rural. Globalization certainly affects rural and urban areas. Global forces are centered in cities. It is in these cities that global operations are centralized, and where one can see most clearly the phenomena associated with their activities, when it changes in the structure of employment, formation of powerful partnerships, development of monumental real estate, emergence of new forms of local governments. Cities are social magnets growing faster and faster. Cities provide sustainable labor force, making available the required physical and technological infrastructure, creating a stable and accommodating regulatory environment. Topic 4- Bonifacio Global City Described as the home of passionate minds, Bonifacio Global City continued being a world center of developments. It plays a significant role in the Philippines economic system by providing new ideas and innovations. Topic 5- Clark as Global City The move was approved by the Philippine Competition Commission on October 18, 2017 and the acquisition was completed by November 14, 2017. Udenna Development corporation has been tasked to oversee the development of the project. It is planned that the whole business development to be completed in ten (10) years. III. Process Questions The following questions are laid down to assess effectiveness of teaching-learning process. It will also help them remember important concept and principles discussed earlier and to apply what they have learned in daily lives. 1. Clark Global City was initially known as the Global Gateway Logistics City. It was conceptualized by American firm Perigrine Development International Incorporated to the Kuwaiti investment firm. The groundbreaking was attended by former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. What do you think are some of its problems? Does a change in administration suspends development efforts? Why? Why not? 2. Have you been to Bonifacio Global City? Where it is actually located? Do you think it will prosper despite some problems still existing in its environment? 3. For a global city to thrive, it needs highly-trained professionals to serve as manpower of multi- national corporations. If given a chance or an opportunity to be employed in any global city, will you take the chance? Why? Why not?
