COURSE REQUIREMENTS: 1. Students are expected to attend all classes and to be on time. 2. Go on one (1) weekend of 3-4 backpacking trips offered. If your present schedule cannot meet these requirements, you will forfeit 100 points. 3. Pay class fee of $35.00 on Jan 20 or Feb 10. Cash or check (payable to MTSU HHP Department). No credit cards, please. SUGGESTED TEXT: The 2 oz. Backpacker: A Problem Solving Manual for Use in the Wilds, by Robert S. Wood. Beyond Backpacking: Guide to Lightweight Hiking, by Ray Jardine. COOPERATIVE ADVENTURE CONCEPT: This is a group concept where each participant has the right to express his/her opinion and allows the group to then decide on the course of action. Some decisions for the group, pertaining to safety and logistics will be made by the instructor. Each member of the group is responsible for his/her own actions on the trail. The safety of all members of the group depends upon everyone remaining alert and concerned about one another, as well as themselves. Each participant is to contribute to the information of this course to provide a quality experience. Outside people will be brought in for their expertise. EVALUATION: Attitude 25 points 440 – 500 = A Folder – 5 tabbed dividers 100 points 380 – 439 = B Attendance 100 points 320 – 379 = C Backpacking trip/trips 100 points 319 – 260 = D Required articles (13) 75 points 0 – 259 = F Exams: Mid-term & Final 100 points Total 500 points FOLDER WITH TABBED SECTIONS: 1. Double-spaced, typewritten log record of each class; mileage; where we went; what we did. (State weather; with whom you rode, etc.) 2. Articles brought to class – highlighted – Prepare Table of Contents for articles in final folder. 3. Any and all handouts 4. Mid-term paper and final presentation (write-up) 5. Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship Information: To retain Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship eligibility, you must earn a cumulative TELS GPA of 2.75 after 24 attempted hours and a cumulative TELS GPA of 3.0 thereafter. A grade of C, D, F, or I in this class may negatively impact TELS eligibility. Dropping a class after 14 days may also impact eligibility; if you withdraw from this class and it results in an enrollment status of less than full time, you may lose eligibility for your lottery scholarship. 100 POINT TRIP OPTIONS – Select One Trip Edie’s Weekend Backpacking Trip: students and weather will determine Mar 19-21 or 26-28, South Cumberland or Big South Fork Campus Recreation Opportunities: Feb 6-7, 2010, Winter Backpacking Trip @ Virgin Falls. $20.00. Register by Feb 2. See Josh Stone at Campus Rec Center. Limited to 12. Apr 17-18, 2010, Women only Backpacking and Yoga Trip @ South Cumberland State Park. ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECT OPTION National Public Land Day: Saturday, Apr 24, 8:30 am – 12:30 pm at Stones River Battlefield (615-893-9501) Snack lunch provided. Wear long pants and sturdy shoes. Bring work gloves if you have them. Backpacking is the subject. Outdoors is the classroom. What you learn is about yourself. Schedule for Backpacking – Spring 2010 Wednesday, 3:00-4:50 pm Jan 20 Introduce self, 3x5 cards, syllabus, share hiking & backpacking experience. Explain log/folder/environment project/mid-term paper/final presentation. Hike to MC equipment room, HHP Office and instructor’s office. Jan 27 Hike to Jaycee Park on Bell Street MEET IN CLASSROOM Feb 3 Ropes Course – low elements MEET @ CRO Wear sturdy shoes and long pants. BRING STUDENT ID Feb 10 MEET IN CLASSROOM, 5 ARTICLES DUE Talk 1: Backpacks, how to pack, adjustment, clean, store, repair and lift properly Talk 2: Planning a backpacking trip Talk 3: Hiking boots/socks/foot care – moleskin Talk 4: Clothing – layering and suggested fabrics for hiking Talk 5: Physical fitness backpack conditioning Feb 17 Hike Stones River Battlefield MEET @ MOTOR POOL
