The course introduces learners to the practice of management and traces its evolution. Specific focus will be on traditional managerial functions of planning, organizing, leading and controlling of organization resources to achieve set organization objectives. Current issues such as change & quality management, Effective communication and motivation practices among others which have greatly had an impact on organization efficiency and effectiveness are also tackled. Course Objectives The course is meant to introduce the students to foundational principles of management as a basis to encounter other management subjects. By the end of the course learners should be able to: 1. Appreciate that success of every organization depends on proper management of its resources. 2. Demonstrate professional skills as future managers with ability to assess and confront various management challenges created by ever changing business environment. 3. Discuss the different skills that managers must have and the roles they can fill. 4. Describe the different categories of managers and the four basic principles of the management process. 5. Understand the role of effective communication, good motivation tactics and control of quality as current modern management practices which can promote efficiency and effectiveness of organizations.
