Curriculum development, multicultural concerns, and school organizations are addressed in relation to teaching. Course Objectives The students will: 1. Describe the historical development and civic missions of the public schools in the United States. (K) 2. Analyze the philosophical foundations of education that form the basis for American education. (K) 3. Analyze the sociological foundations of education in the United States, with particular concern for multicultural issues and concerns. (K) 4. Interpret the evolving role of public schools and public school teachers. (K, R) 5. Analyze the broad goals that have been proposed for the public schools in American society and how they have been translated into curriculum. (K, R) 6. Describe the organizational structure of the public schools in the United States, and the roles of school boards, teachers, parents, students, and the community, and the relationships between those groups. (K, R) 7. Analyze the major issues and problems that confront educators. (K, R) Subject Matter Content A. Illustrative Course Activities A. Compare philosophical aspects of educational “theories” in a quiz, test, or paper. B. Trace historical trajectories and trends in contemporary educational practices and debates regarding American education. C. Conduct interviews that allow teachers, parents, and/or community members to express their views on education and analyze responses in a written report using historical, philosophical, and sociological paradigms. D. Investigate the history of an American racial or ethnic minority group and do an oral presentation tracing implications for educational policy and practice. E. Select an article on a current educational issue from a newspaper, magazine, or professional teacher’s journal and write an analysis within historical, philosophical, and/or sociological frameworks.
