Rode, Assistant Professor Office Hours: Wednesdays 5-6pm (Rush 414) Email: jar394@drexel.edu COURSE DESCRIPTION This course focuses on understanding interactive systems from a user- centered perspective. You will learn about how people perceive, process, remember, utilize, share and communicate about information in work and non-work situations; and you will learn how interaction technologies can take these human issues into account. You will become familiar with design principles and evaluation techniques in the field of human- computer interaction (HCI). Credits: 3.00 Pre-requisites and Co-requisites: None required. COURSE OBJECTIVES When you have completed this course, you will be able to: • Describe the scope of study of HCI • Recognize why user-centered interface design is important and the consequences of not paying attention to it • Understand basic principles of human memory, perception and learning and how these relate to graphical user interface design • Describe the interaction between people, the work they do, the information systems they use, and the environments in which they work • Adopt a user-oriented approach to the design of interactive computer systems • Find and interpret the current literature in human-computer interaction Course readings focus on:  Introduction and usability  Cognitive frameworks  Emotional computing  Virtual environments  Computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW) P a g e | 1 NOTE: Aspects of this course are subject to change at the discretion of the instructor. The Design of Everyday Things. Basic Books: New York. *Available at library (2hr loan) and for purchase from the bookstore or online. 2. [JACKO] Jacko, J. (2008). The Human-Computer Interaction Handbook: fundamentals, evolving technologies, and emerging application (2nd Edition). Lawrence Erlbaum Associates: New York. *Available on Blackboard (PDF). The library edition is VERY out of date. Additional reading material, both required and optional, will be posted on Blackboard. GRADING The overall course grade will be based on a total of 100 points, weighted as follows: 30% Individual Homework Assignments (6 total @ 5% each) 40% Weekly Journal Entries (8 total @ 5% each) 20% Team Project (5% Presentation & 15% Report) 10% Participation & Peer Evaluation (5% Participation & 5% Peer Evaluation) The following grades will be awarded for points accumulated: A+ 100 B + 87-89 C + 77-79 D + 67-69 A 94-99 B 84-86 C 74-76 D 60-66 A- 90-93 B- 80-83 C- 70-73 F < 60 Individual Homework Assignments (30%) Assignments must be submitted electronically via the Blackboard Assignments folder by 11:59pm on the date indicated on the schedule of topics (Tuesday nights), unless otherwise noted. Late assignments will be penalized 10% of the final grade for every day past the original due date. There will be four homework assignments (see page 6 for dates & topics). Detailed instructions for each assignment will be distributed in class and posted to Blackboard. To ensure grading consistency, included with the assignment instructions will be a rubric describing how the assignment will be graded. Team Project (20%) The team project will entail 3-4 students completing the design and evaluation of one aspect of an existing interactive system. The instructor will assign teams during week 6. This saves time, and replicates the world of work, where needs of the organization, rather than employees’ personal preferences, drive decisions. The instructor will respond to all emails in 24hours during this period, but makes no promises to do sooner so please plan accordingly. The instructor will be at an academic conference Sept 24-28th and Oct 10-13, during which time email responses will be substantially delayed. Should that change, you will be notified in advance. Course Evaluations Course evaluations are a required element of every course in the iSchool. There is no personal information attached to any evaluation form. Please be part of this integral process by submitting a course evaluation at end of the term. Course Format Most class sessions will contain a lecture covering the core concepts from the assigned readings and a group activity/group discussion designed to help students understand and apply the concepts to real world design problems. All class sessions will be recorded and will be available for viewing under the Class Capture link on Blackboard. Lectures may be streamed and rebroadcast for educational purposes only by Drexel University. Late Policy All assignments are due to the correct Assignments folder on 11:59pm on the date indicated on the schedule of topics (Tuesday nights), unless otherwise noted. For each additional day past the original due date, students will lose 10% of their assigned grade. Team presentations cannot be rescheduled. Readings & Assigned Texts Course lectures are designed to supplement, not replace, the course readings; it is expected that students complete the assigned readings before coming to class. Doing well on your journal depends on careful reading of the material with adequate time to reflect.
