Course Description: This course is intended to introduce non-technical liberal arts students to mathematical problem solving using computational tools. Students will learn the basics of a spreadsheet, word processor, and various other mathematical software packages. Text-book How do you know? Using Math to Make Decisions by Smith & Hirst. Additional Resources: Scientific Calculator Miscellaneous handouts- given in class Course Outline In this course, we will attempt to cover four main topics from the textbook. Grading policy The following grading scale will used in this course: 4 topic tests, 600 Final exam, 200 Quizzes 100 Lab assignments 100 Exams There will be four end of chapter tests through out the semester. There will be a take- home portion for those end of chapter tests. Makeup exams will not be given in this course. If you missed an exam due to an "Extreme circumstances" such as illnesses, death of a relative, or problems of this nature, you have to present documents. In such cases, student's final exam's grade will be used for the missed exam. The final exam will be a cumulative exam and worth 200 points. You need a minimum grade of 55% on the comprehensive Final exam in order to pass this course. Attendance Attendance will be taken daily in class within the first 5 minutes of class. The math department’s policy for attendance is that after 8 absences a student will not pass this course. There are NO “excused “ absences. Plan to be in class on time. When a student misses a class, it is his/her responsibility to get the class assignment from the instructor and turn it in at the due date as specified on the assignment. Please note that you are an adult attending a college level class and are expected to act professionally. Keep this in mind that disrespectful behavior or disruptive attitude during our class or lab will not be tolerated. Bad conduct will adversely affect your final grade. Quizzes Students are required to attend all classes. Short quizzes will be given periodically. These quizzes are very easy and are designed to help students with their understanding of the basic concepts and to encourage them to attend the class. Makeup quizzes will be given only due to extreme circumstances such as illnesses, death of a relative, or problems of this nature. In those cases you have to communicate with me right a way as well as present documents on the day you are taking your makeup quiz. Labs All labs are carefully designed to help you develop the required skills. You are required to attend all labs. You are required to bring a calculator, and your textbook to the lab. Some labs have a pre-lab part that must be completed prior to the lab session during the class period. You are required to go through the pre-lab activity before the lab session. This will help you complete a lab exercise with confidence and better understanding of the subject. There will be laboratory assignments every week. The due date is indicated on the lab worksheet. No late lab assignments will be accepted. The write up of your lab work should be typed using a word processor. There will be a signing sheet in the lab. You are required to sign in as you enter the lab and sign out as you leave. If you miss a lab for an excused reason (extreme circumstances), you may pick up a copy of the worksheet and complete it on your own before the next lab ( the due date will be indicated on the lab) for the full credit. If you miss a lab unexcused, you may pick up a copy of the worksheet and complete it on your own before the next lab ( the due date will be indicated on the lab) for 50% of the credit. Note that your absentee will still be counted as 1 hour in either case. Abuse of computers, disturbing the class and other students, and copying lab works from other students are prohibited and will be seriously dealt with. I also reserve the right to lower a final grade for extremely poor attitude. Grading Scale Final grades will be based on a +/- scale as follows: A = 930 to 1000, A- = 900-929 B+ = 870 to 899, B = 830-869, B- = 800-829 C+ = 770 to 799, C = 730-769, C- = 700-729 D+ = 670 to 699, D = 630-669, D- = 600-629 F = Below 600 No incomplete grade will be given in this course.
