Bear vs Bare Bear(n)- a large, heavy mammal that walks on the soles of its feet, having thick fur and a very short tail. Bears are related to the dog family but most species are omnivorous. Ex: People saw a giant bear last night. Bare(adj)- (of a person or part of the body) not clothed or covered. Ex: I defeated the dragon with my own bare hands. 2. Dear vs Deer Deer(n)- an animal with long legs that eats grass, leaves, etc. Ex: I want to see some deer, let’s go to the deer farm. Dear(adj) - used in the salutation of a letter as an expression of affection or respect or as a conventional greeting Ex: Tomorrow I will visit my dear friend. 3. Ad vs Add Ad(n) — short for “Advertisement”. Ex: The ads in Facebook are annoying. Add(v)- join (something) to something else so as to increase the size, number, or amount. Ex: Let’s add some sugar in the mixture. 4. Flour vs Flower Flour (noun): This is the main ingredient in bread. It’s a powder made from ground grains. Ex: Tony wanted to make a cake, but he didn’t have any flour, so he couldn’t. Flower (noun): The decorative, colourful part of a plant. Ex: my boyfriend gave me flowers just now. 5. Hear vs Here to hear (verb): This is the action that you do with your ears. The sense is called “hearing.” Ex: talk louder, I cant hear you. here (adv): “Here” indicates the place where you are at any moment. It’s the opposite of “there,” basically. Ex: Can you set the boxes down over here please? Yes, right here next to the door. 6. Attribute (v.) to think of as belonging to or originating in some person, place or thing Ex: He attributes his love of spicy food to his grandmother's cooking. (n.) a characteristic or quality Ex: Paul's sense of humour was his best attribute. 7. Content (adj.) happy or satisfied Ex: Alex was content with his life. (n.) all that is contained inside something Ex: This program includes inappropriate content. 8. Object (n.) a thing that you can see or touch Ex: Please don’t throw objects in the ocean. (v.) to be opposed to Ex: I object to your argument that my client is guilty. 9. Project (n.) a plan or proposal Ex: The Creative Writing project needs to be finished by the end of the week. (v.) to throw or hurl forward Ex: The ball projected over the players’ heads and into the end zone. 10. subject (adj.) under authority or control Ex: The peasants are subject to the king’s commands. (v.) to expose someone to undesirable conditions Ex: Don’t change the subject when I’m talking to you. (n.) a topic learned in school Ex: My favourite subject is Creative Writing. 11. Produce (v.) to create or make Ex: Let’s produce some music about our situation today. (n.) fresh fruits or vegetables Ex: We can buy fresh produce at the farmer’s market. 12. Knight vs Night knight (n): A man given a special honor (or rank) by a king or queen. Their title is usually “Sir.” Ex: One popular English legend talks about King Arthur and the Knights_of the Round Table. night (n): The period of time when it’s dark and most people sleep. Ex: I prefer to work at night, since it’s quieter and not as hot. I can concentrate better. 13. marry, merry to marry (v): The action when two people have a wedding; also called “to get married.” Ex: My grandpa told me to be sure to marry a good woman. Merry (adj): A synonym for “happy,” but less common in modern English. Mostly used in phrases like “Merry Christmas!” Ex: I don’t like to go shopping in December because the song “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” always gets stuck in my head. 14. Pair vs Pear
