PRIFYSGOL ABERYSTWYTH UNIVERSITY DEGREE EXAMINATIONS 2012 DEPARTMENT OF LAW AND CRIMINOLOGY CRIME CONTROL AND PREVENTION (CR10320) Time allowed TWO hours Answer TWO questions. Candidates are not permitted to bring any books, notes or any other materials into the examination. 1. Explain the difference between measures which may be described as „punishment‟, „treatment‟, and „prevention‟. Is it possible to draw clear distinctions between these functions of the measures which may be used as a response to criminal offending? 2. Answer EITHER (a) OR (b): (a) Discuss the rise and the development of the „new police‟. In your discussion you should identify how and why the relationship between the police and the community has changed since its origin and assess the impact that such change has had on policing today. OR (b) Outline and evaluate the effect on policing arising from what is commonly referred to as „cop culture‟. 3. Young (1999) describes the transition from modernity to late modernity as representing a movement from an „inclusive‟ to an „exclusive‟ society. What does he mean by this and what implications does this have for crime control policy? 4. Explain and critically discuss both the “retributivist” and the “consequentialist” justifications for punishment. Which do you find the more compelling? Give reasons for your answer. 5. Outline the features of rational choice theory and explain if and how this theory can be used to explain both property crime and interpersonal violence.
