These relationships are extremely important and make a real contribution to graduate employability. Career focussed courses Aston’s close and established links with business, the public sector and the professions ensure that our career focussed degree programmes are inspiring, challenging and constantly updated to equip students with essential work-related skills and experiences. Excellence in teaching and research We are committed to high quality teaching and academic excellence, ensuring we provide the highest standard of education to our students. Aston has an excellent reputation for research which shapes and improves lives. WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO BSc degree programmes > Computer Science > Computer Science with Multimedia > Computer Science with Business > Computing and Mathematics (joint honours) > Cyber Security (new for 2019) The courses attract well-qualified applicants with offers for 2019 entry at ABB-BBB. The combined intake is now over 200 students. Our courses have a strong focus on information systems engineering incorporating scientific principles, with an emphasis on design and practical applications. Students benefit from practical teaching informed by the application- focused research expertise of computer science academics. Many of our students proceed to an industrial placement in their third year and the rate of graduate employment is extremely high. Our recent graduates have found positions with companies such as Capgemini, Microsoft, Toyota, Goldman Sachs and Coca-Cola. The most recent Research Excellence Framework, which assesses the research quality in UK higher education, has ranked over 60% of the research we submitted as ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally recognised’. Notably, in the category of Impact, 100% of our research was classed as ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally recognised’. We have a large network of industry research collaborators and are leaders in the delivery of Knowledge Transfer Partnership funding. THE COMPUTER SCIENCE DEPARTMENT MSc degree programmes > Software Engineering > Computer Science (conversion course for graduates with non-competing related first degrees) > Artificial Intelligence (new for 2019) Degree Apprenticeships Aston University has a long history of working in partnership with business and industry. We were a pioneer of the placement year and the first university to offer degree apprenticeship. The Computer Science Department’s Digital and Technology Solutions Apprenticeship programme offers two distinct pathways: Software Engineering and Business Analytics. Our degree level apprenticeships have been developed in partnership with organisations including Capgemini, CGI and The Economist. We are extending our apprenticeship offering and the department is developing a new Level 7 (MSc) Apprenticeship for Digital and Technology Solutions Specialists. The Computer Science Department at Aston has a strong record of delivering applied research, winning over £3.1 million of research funding annually. Computer Science was ranked 4th out of 107 institutions for Graduate Prospects (Complete University Guide 2018). All BSc (Hons) Computer Science degrees are accredited for Chartered IT Professional (CITP) status – the British Computer Society’s Chartered qualification. Due to increasing industry demand to collaborate with our Computer Science department, in 2016 we launched an exclusive partnership program for 20 companies: the Computer Science Industry Club.
