Chemistry - Purdue University Bachelor of Science Librarian Eric Snajdr After consultation with faculty the following courses have been identified as those in which the librarian liaison to the school or department will provide educational services as part of a ‘curricular approach’ to information literacy skills education. Course title/number: Windows on Science (First Year Seminar)/ SCI-I 120 Learning Outcomes • Students will be able to describe and use basic services and resources offered by University Library (e.g. Service & Information Desk, Computer Consultant Desk) • Students will know how to request help or advice from University Library, either in-person or online. • Students will be able to use a general academic database (e.g. Academic Search Premier) to locate an article on a general science topic. • Students will be able to use the library catalog, IUCAT, to identify and locate science books (print and/or electronic) and/or other media relevant to their coursework. • Students will be able to identify the elements of a basic citation such as author and title for several types of resources (e.g., a book, a journal article, a web page) in order to avoid plagiarizing. Teaching Strategies • Brief lecture • Demonstrations • Hands-on exercises Assessment Strategies • Pretest beginning of semester/Posttest end of semester Library Session • In-class activity – “University Library ‘Facts’ – An exploration of UL Website” (collected by Librarian Eric Snajdr, participation points) • Assignment - “SCI-120 Find it! – Databases and articles” (Graded by Librarian Eric Snajdr) Why this course? Required for new and prospective Chemistry majors, SCI-I 120, covers an integrative overview of science, examining science and society, the scientific method and community of scientists, undergraduate research, professional ethics, an exploration of science-based careers, and strategies for success as a science major. This course offers a prime avenue for orienting new science students to University Library as well as an introduction to scientific information. Course title/number: Intro to Cornerstone in Chemistry / CHEM-C 294 Learning Outcomes § Students will be able to separate out the various search concepts/dimensions/variables within research question § identify ways to broaden search results (using synonyms or like terms of search concepts) and narrow (using limiters) § Be able to construct search strategies on a topic using “AND” between major concepts and “OR” between synonyms in two discipline specific database (Web of Science and one other database of student’s choosing) to locate relevant literature on a topic § Be able to conduct forward and backward citation searching from a known article. § Students, in a previous session with their course instructor have examined an instructor selected scientific journal article and examined the parts of a scientific article. In this exercise students will become familiar with the journal literature related to a science topic of their own choosing.
