In this assessment, the below points will be mentioned: • Location of the company. • Threats that the firm might face. • Vulnerabilities of the companies. • Network, servers, storage and redundancy topologies of the firm. • Risks that might occur in this firm. • Value of the company and the losses that can occur. • Teams that are used in case of a disaster. 2.2 - Challenges that were faced No challenges faced we got help from the manager of the company. 12 Chapter 3 – Problem Statement 15 ISP company is obliged to have a redundancy plan because the internet is going to people via routing so if a router is down TerraNet must in maximum timeslot of 15 min deliver the internet via alternate route to the people the internet will go slower but the important in this procedure is to preserve availability and connectivity to people....................................................................................17 3.2.5 - Operating systems..........................................................................................................................17 TerraNet was using windows xp on all workstations but they upgraded all their workstations to windows 10 x64 and they uses windows server 2008 R2 and windows server 2012 for active directory and database............................................................................................................................17 3.2.6 - Servers and Switches.....................................................................................................................17 Terranet uses Cisco equipment for networking and Huawei for the server’s infrastructure............17 4.1 – Future Work................................................................................................................................30 4.2 - Conclusion....................................................................................................................................30 4.3- Percentage of Completion............................................................................................................30 REFERENCES....................................................................................................................................31 In this chapter, a description of the different major points will be discussed in details later on and the problems that were faced during this assessment which will be fully detailed In this chapter, a short description of the company with its infrastructure will be shown. Then defining the risk assessment that the company can encounter, this chapter includes as well an analysis of the business impact where it will be concluded with an implementation of BC/DR plan. 1.1 - Description of the company TerraNet is a leading ISP in providing state-of-the-art digital communications, networking services, and Internet connectivity to individuals and businesses. Founded in 1999, TerraNet launched a comprehensive range of leading Internet connectivity services and Web solutions. TerraNet designs, develops, and customizes a complete line of industry-leading, high- performance Internet services and solutions. Terranet association with Cableone team which is responsible for all the field operations, bandwidth. TerraNet workplace is located in Charles El Helou Avenue, the main headquarters are located in Downtown and it's called Commium where there is the backup location. These two only branches in Lebanon are connected via WAN. There is no alternate version site for the company 15 Chapter 3 – Problem Statement 16 http://www.terra.net.lb so, when it becomes down the whole company work goes down too. They don't have any mirrored, hot, warm, nor cold website to heal in case of a disaster. 2.1 - Company’s infrastructure: Terranet was founded in 1999 many things changed for that date till now except for backups since unfortunately backup using tapes is still being used by the company. The managers still prefer it since it is cheaper than the others and they think it’s more secure. Nowadays the RTO is 1-hour minimum for critical situations but other simple issues are done with a short period time. 3.2.2 - Backup As we said before TerraNet uses backup by tapes method. We can say it uses father and grandfather backup. Where tapes are moved to a secondary location to Commium in downtown and a second copy of tape is stored in a floor inside the building where no staff allowed to enter since keys are shared with the top manager and the administrator of the backup team. 3.2.2- Cloud Services: All backup and all mission critical applications are on a cloud using PAAS. IT Team installs the updates and other applications are installed by them. 3.2.3 - Power TerraNet is safe when it comes to power, it has a well performing backup UPS which get maintenance every month, and it has a backup generator which goes on instantly when power go off but all servers stay alive all that time. 3.2.4 - Redundancy 16 Chapter 3 – Problem Statement 17 ISP company is obliged to have a redundancy plan because the internet is going to people via routing so if a router is down TerraNet must in maximum timeslot of 15 min deliver the internet via alternate route to the people the internet will go slower but the important in this procedure is to preserve availability and connectivity to people. 3.2.5 - Operating systems TerraNet was using windows xp on all workstations but they upgraded all their workstations to windows 10 x64 and they uses windows server 2008 R2 and windows server 2012 for active directory and database. 3.2.6 - Servers and Switches Terranet uses Cisco equipment for networking and Huawei for the server’s infrastructure. 3.2.7- Virtualization. Virtualization is the process of creating a virtual version of something like computer hardware. It involves using specialized software to create a virtual or software-created version of a computing resource rather than the actual version of the same resource. The organization uses VMs for redundancy and to support the fast incident healing and data recovery. Live migration of VMs occurs through HYPER-V. Type-1, or bare-metal hypervisors, are installed directly onto the physical hardware. As such, they must contain their own operating systems for booting, running the hardware, and connecting to the network. Popular Type-1 hypervisors include Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware ESXi. Type-2, or hosted hypervisors, run on an operating system that is directly installed on the hardware. In this case, a copy of Windows, or a Unix-based system must be installed to boot the system and access the hardware. Once the operating system is running, the hosted hypervisor can 17 Chapter 3 – Problem Statement 20 3.1.2- Human threats: 1) Terrorist attacks 2) War 3) Physical hardware stealing 4) Cybercrime attack 20 Chapter 3 – Problem Statement 21 - . 4.1 - Business Impact Analysis: a) If an earthquake occurs, the building might be inaccessible and all the IT systems might be damaged. b) If a fire engulfed the warehouse area, the inventory might be smoke and water damaged by the fire suppression systems. However, the IT systems would still be up. c) If a flood happens all electrical equipment and hardware may be destroyed and will not be accessed add to that human loss my happen. 21 Chapter 3 – Problem Statement 22 d) If a terrorist attack occurs in or beside the company, the company will be damaged physically. e) If a war occurs in the country the company will be affected financially and physically. f) Physical hardware stealing may put the company in a bad situation as if it is not secure to store people data etc… g) Cyberattack may affect the functionality and availability of the company. BIA Report: Key business functions and processes: Operational: Financial: The company is financial Critical Reputational: Terranet whole work depends on reputation Environmental: Terranet Legal  Category 1: Critical functions – Mission critical  Category 2: Necessary functions – Important 22 Chapter 3 – Problem Statement 25 found in program offices. But, transferring a risk to another organization can result in dependencies and loss of control that may have their own complications. 6.1 - The BC/DR plans: Activating BC/DR Teams The activation of the BC/DR plan requires the cooperation and the permission of different teams  Crisis management team  Damage assessment team  Planning committee  Emergency team  IT Team/  Communication team After assessing all damages, if the disaster is considered as an intermediate (depending on the affected processes or application) or as major disruption the crisis team will trigger the recovery phase.  Recovery Phase After assessing the damages and after triggering the recovery phase. The responsible teams will start to the failover process of failing over all the mission Critical application to the recovery site. After containing the problem and determining the final disaster assessment the responsible team will start the business continuity process where the firm will resume work from the recovery site.  Business continuity phase The company always have access to the recovery site even if the core switch goes down and all the work will be resumed. Then, after repairing the main site all databases should be resynchronized and replicated to the main site. 25 Chapter 3 – Problem Statement 26  Maintenance Phase BC/DR plan should be maintained every month to ensure that hardware equipment is still in good condition and operating systems are up to date. If a problem happens and a hardware failure the company will suffer from losses. 6.2- BC/DR teams As mentioned above the below teams are responsible of activating, maintaining and testing the BC/DR plan.  Crisis management team  Damage assessment team  Planning committee  Emergency team  IT Team  Communication team The above team are formed of HEAD of each department and since this is an SMB the below mentioned Persons are the same in each team. Mentioning: IT Team, General Manager, Director of finance, F&B Director, Sales Director, Maintenance Director, HR Director, PR Director, Purchasing Manager. IT Team: since this a small firm the IT Team is formed of 3 people’s IT Technician, IT assistant Manager, IT Manager. All the members are well trained and have all required specialties to manage all sorts of problems and responsible of different kind of systems. Add to that the above teams are responsible not only in monitoring and activating the BC/DR phase but also to ensure that these phases go smoothly without affecting other teams and to handle the media to ensure that the image of the company is not affected, add to that the all the above personnel should have the charisma and the ability to deal with guest’s complaint to maintain the trust between the company and between the guests. 6.3- Communication Plans 26 Chapter 3 – Problem Statement 27 Communication is an essential part of having a BC/DR plan since without communication and cooperation the plan will fail and the RTO will be high which will lead to loss of reputation and money. 6.4- Customer Services Customer services team will handle the customer’s complaints since their job is to handle the customers and to explain for them the type of technical problems and the duration of fulfilling their cases and issues in a perfect way to limit the reputation and customer losses. The upcoming chapter will conclude the project with a conclusion of all the studies that were details in the previous chapters. 27 Chapter 4 – Conclusion 30 4.1 – Future Work Terranet is expanding year by year and cannot stay with the current technologies. Plans are already being implemented like fiber optic from Achrafieh to Hamra. Moreover, the IT team have started planning, and for new methods of backup to ensure fastest backup and fastest recovery service. Database add to some network equipment’s that will be used to replicated VM’s. These two sites types will apply an effective zero downtime since all databases will be backed up and replicated using live backup and replication and by this method no discrepancies between the databases and files that are saved will occur. To apply a high-speed connection in terms of files and backups transferring fiber channels will be used. As a result, of the above- mentioned infrastructure the recovery site will go automatically up once the data recovery is activated, which will ensure high availability. 4.2 - Conclusion The company has a weakness in its infrastructure and it is advised to start working on a data disaster plan to make business run continuously without interruption in the service. New technologies should be used in the infrastructure. There are many suggests from the IT team but still no implemented. 4.3- Percentage of Completion Question # Percentage of Completion 1 100% 2 100% 3 100% 4 100% 5 100% 30  REFERENCES [1] TerraNet home page, http://www.terra.net.lb [2] Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Planning for IT Professionals, 2nd Edition by Susan Snedaker [3] http://www.gartner.com/smarterwithgart ner/disaster-preparedness-enablebusiness- continuity-via-a-business-impactanalysis/ [4] http://www.dbpmanagement.com/15/5-ways-to-manage-risk [5] https://www.mitre.org/publications/systems-engineering-guide/acquisition-systems- engineering/risk-management/risk-mitigation-planning-implementation-and-progress- monitoring
