This is intended to illustrate the importance, ubiquity and commercial value of databases. It can be paused to discuss the points made. 10 Watch the set of videos pausing to discuss the content. 5 Discuss the videos to assess learning. Ask questions such as: • What is a database? • What name is given to software applications that assist us in manipulating data? • What database manipulations does it assist with? A persistent and ordered collection of data. Data handling software. Creation of database, inserting and importing data, interrogation, producing forms and reports. 15 Pupils to complete Worksheet 1 either on paper or on a computer. Ask individual students for their responses and discuss with the class so that all students have the correct answers. Answers provided. Extension Challenge/Homework Students to complete and submit Worksheet 2 for homework. 5 Plenary Using a projector display the Interactive Plenary Activity. Use this to initiate a discussion on the security and human rights issues raised by the storage of personal data in computer databases. (a) Data handling software enables us to easily create and manage computer databases. List the ways in which the software assists in data management. Create data structure, enter and delete data, import data, interrogate the data, update the data. Creation of forms and reports. (b) Make a list of the advantages of computer databases over paper-based ones. You may need to carry out some research to find out all of the advantages. Large databases take up far less space. Quicker to interrogate the data. Easily sort the data into any order. Easy to edit the data – no messy crossing out. Can print multiple copies. Can attach to emails. Can use for mail merge letters. C) Why might data held in a computer database be less secure than paper-based versions? Harder to tell if the data has been changed. Smaller physical size and easier to steal. Easier to access – do not have to physically enter a building, office and/or filing cabinet. Can be accessed from many computers on a network and from anywhere in the world if it is online. 1 2
