Our focus this year will be arguments and analyzing how writers develop successful arguments to create change in their communities. Your summer assignment will prepare you for the type of arguments we will examine this upcoming year. Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave by Frederick Douglass – you may acquire a physical copy of read an online edition. The Lively Art of Writing by Lucile Vaughn Payne – you may purchase a copy of the text or borrow an online edition. Please read Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, considering Douglass’s argument, audience, and purpose as you read. As you explore the text, answer the following argument-specific questions and submit your responses by the assigned due dates. Your responses should be answered in complete sentences and will count as formative grades. You will have an objective test over Douglass’s text once school begins. Questions 1 – 19 are due June 22. Questions 20 – 42 are due July 27. For The Lively Art of Writing, read it. You may want to take notes. This is a great book for writing. We will have quizzes and discussions over it during the first six weeks and will refer to it throughout the year. Please join our AP Lang Summer Reading Classroom: bg6ktvd. Compare and contrast the descriptions Garrison provides of Douglass and his humanity versus the slaveholders and the system of slavery. 2. How does Garrison appeal to religion in order to achieve his purpose? 3. How does Garrison’s preface lend credibility to Douglass’ narrative? Chapter 1 4. Examine Douglass’s writing for diction connected to animals. What is the purpose of this word choice? Provide examples. 5. What does Douglass assume his audience values when it comes to family? How does he appeal to these specific values (pathos)? Provide evidence. 6. Examine Douglass’s word choice of “human flesh-monger” for those who sell slaves. What is the effect of this word choice, and how does it contribute to the characterization of the slave system in the South? 7. Point to at least one piece of imagery Douglass provides that you find particularly powerful. Embed your quote, then note the impact and effect of this imagery. Consider audience in your response. Chapter Two 8. What types of logos does Douglass provide in this chapter? Consider slaves’ allowances, clothing, and living conditions. What is the effect of such logos? 9. What assumptions does Douglass make about what his audience values in this chapter? How does he try to appeal to these values? 10. How does the comparison to a man on a desolate island at the end of this chapter express one of Douglass’s purposes? What is the effect of this comparison? Chapter 3 11. Analyze the significance of Old Barney’s age and his treatment in this chapter. Consider audience, strategy, and purpose. 12. At times, Douglass shifts point of view, moving from retelling other slaves’ experiences to recounting and reflecting on his own experiences and feelings. What is the effect and/or purpose of these shifts?
