The expression on her face is one of utter anguish, twisted by pain and grief. Near the man’s body lies a cardboard sign that scrawled the words, “Pusher ako. ‘Wag tularan”— ‘I am a drug pusher. Don’t copy me.’ Death Penalty Every day, people are executed and sentenced to death by states as punishment for a variety of crimes, sometimes for acts that should not be criminalized. In some countries, it can be drug- related offenses, in other it is reserved for terrorist-related acts and murder. Some execute people who were under 18 years old when the crime was committed, others use death penalty against people with mental and intellectual disabilities and several others apply the death penalty after unfair trials in clear violation of international laws and standards. People can spend years on death row, not knowing when their time is up or whether they will see their families one last time. Death penalty in the U.S is reserved for the most numerous murders, the most brutal and conscienceless murders but according to amnesty organization, death penalty does not deter crime. Countries who execute commonly the death penalty as a way to deter people from committing crime but this claim has been repeatedly discreted. It is used as a political tool. The authority in some countries for example Iran and Sudan, use death penalty to punish political opponents. In many cases recorded by Amnesty International, people were executed after being convicted in grossly unfair trials. In some countries death penalty are imposed as mandatory punishment for certain offences, meaning that judge is not able to consider the circumstances of the crime or of the defendant before sentencing. Even though death penalty is used on people who cannot stop themselves from doing crime, according to commondream.org, dream penalty is quite expensive and life imprisonment can be cheaper. Over the lifetime of a case, executing prisoners can be three times as expensive as a life prison, primarily due to higher cost of capital punishment trials, automatic appeals, and tightened security on death row with staff to prisoner ratios. Commuting to all death sentence to life in prison would save hundreds of dollars per year and many billions over the coming decades. Death penalty does not deter people from committing crime nor does it show justice for what they have done hence death penalty should not be used to punish people who committed numerous crimes.
