Cork Institute of Technology Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering - Award (NFQ Level 7) Summer 2007 Computer Applications (Time: 3 Hours) Answer THREE questions from Section A and TWO questions from Section B. For questions 1, 2, 3 and 4 use the computer. For question 2 , use an answer book. Use different answer books for each section. Prof. E. McQuade Mr. M. Hennessy Mr. D. A. Collins Dr. P. Fenton Section A 1. (a) Figure 1(a) shows the hardware configuration of an industrial controller. Using the software package PL7 Pro®, create a new application called “Calculate” and configure the hardware as shown in the figure. [4] (b) Figure 1(b) is a program for the controller referred to in (a), written in ladder language. Using PL7 Pro® software, recreate the program in structured text language. [16] 2. (a) In a three phase system, the expressions for the instantaneous phase voltages are… u1 = 100sinω t u2 = 100sin ω t − 2π 3     u3 = 100sin ω t − 4π 3     In an Excel® file called “Triphase.xls”, create a data table and chart showing the variation of the phase voltages over one cycle of 360°. [8] (b) Extend the data table in (a) to automatically calculate the rectified output voltage, being at every instant the difference between the most positive and most negative phase voltage. Add this voltage to the chart created in (a). [8] (c) Identify the minimum and maximum values of the output voltage and the number of output voltage pulses per cycle. Write these in your answer book. [4] 2 3. Figure 2 shows three slides from a Powerpoint® presentation in ‘handout’ format. Recreate the content of this presentation in a new file called “Show.ppt” and prepare it for a slide show to a conservative audience. [20] 4. (a) Figure 3 (a) shows a number of graphical symbols encountered in power systems. The symbols are set against a background grid of 2.5 mm. Draw the symbols to the appropriate scale in a new AutoCAD file called ‘Line_diagram.dwg’ [8] (b) Create an attribute called ‘ID’ for each symbol to act as a reference designation during insertion. The default values are: switchgear Q1, transformers T1. In each case, the attribute is to be placed above the symbol in 2.5 mm-high ‘Arial’ font, bottom-centre aligned. [4] (c) Create a W-Block for each symbol. Give each block an appropriate name and insertion point. Save the blocks in the same folder and disk as the drawing file. [4] (d) Use the W-blocks to create the line diagram shown in Figure 3 (b). [4] Section B 5. (a) Explain what a debugger is. (4 marks) (b) What is the difference between an option button and a checkbox? When would you use one over the other? (4 marks) (c) What does the Cint( ) function do? Explain why you might need it and give an example of its use. (4 marks) (d) Explain briefly what a combobox might be used for. (4 marks) (e) Give an example of a property that is available for a command button, but is not available for a textbox. Explain what this property is used for. Also explain one property they have in common. (4 marks)
