Demonstrating Teaching in Chemistry 5: A Narrative and Reflective Essay By: Reygena Aranil As preservice teachers in the elementary grades, we ought to play a vital role in the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor development of the child. That’s why we need to be involved in certain tasks or activities that will boost our knowledge and skills and make us competent enough to face the real world of education. As I remember the demo teaching of Sharmaine Llanera in Chemistry 5, tackling materials that are useful and harmful started with a motivation tin in which the student ought to pick a picture in the box and identify if the picture belongs to harmful or useful materials. Through this, the teacher could be able to set the mood of the class. In the presentation process, the teacher presented a picture of a tree and let the students share their ideas on what materials we could make from that tree. Then, after that, in the discussion part, the teacher presents the definition, example, and function of harmful materials and useful materials. Here, the teacher presents mastery of the topic. For the evaluation part, the teacher let the students draw harmful and useful materials that they knew. The teacher also presented two worksheets to test the students' understanding of the topics that had been discussed. And to end the lesson, the teacher lets the student bring pictures or materials that are useful but can also be harmful. The demo teaching presented a high level of energy that should be in a class environment for the reason that it will let the students be motivated and comfortable to express what they have in mind. Being a future educator, I need to consider a lot of things when handling my class, such as my instructional materials, my assessment tool, my strategy to be used during class hours, the learning style of my students, etc. That’s why I think it could cause me to perform well and live the passion of teaching by having the courage to do the task, to learn the content, and to willingly practice to achieve mastery in this field of profession.
