Students whose Science Reasoning subscore for the ACT is 20 or above (SAT 950 or above combined score) and students who have earned a C or better in BI 101 can enroll in BI 111. Students whose Science Reasoning score is below a 20 must enroll in BI 101. Students who successfully complete BI 101 can then enroll the next semester in BI 111. BI 102 is not required. Department of Chemistry and Industrial Hygiene Math: All of our major options require mathematics at least through calculus II. Therefore, a student should follow a pre-calculus pathway. Depending on the math ACT, a first year student would enroll in either MA 100 (if math ACT is 16 or below), MA 112 (math ACT of 22 or higher), or straight to MA 125 if they have a math ACT of 28 or higher, which is somewhat rare for our incoming students. It gets a little complicated after MA 112, because some majors (IH and General Chemistry) can choose to take the business calculus sequence (MA 121 and 122) as opposed to the regular sequence (MA 125 and 126). Business calculus is not trig-based, so they don’t need something like a MA 113 or MA 115, but for the regular calculus they do. That would likely be beyond the first year’s discussion, but a person relatively strong in math could take MA 112 fall, and MA 113 spring (on the way to MA 125), or they could take MA 115 which combines algebra and trig and prepares them for MA 125. The majority of students will be placed in either MA 100 or MA 112 again, depending on that math ACT. While not absolutely necessary to take a math course during their first year, we usually will recommend it before they forget everything they learned in high school. Chemistry: First year would either by CH 111 and CH 112, or a prep course first (CH 101). At this point in time, we do not have a pre-requisite for CH 111 other than they should have had chemistry sometime in the past. We do look at the math ACT and/or science ACT. If we see something low 20’s or below, we 2 will usually recommend that they start in CH 101. A student who has to drop back to take MA 100 should probably start in CH 101. At that point, they can move to CH 111. The second part of intro chemistry (CH 102) is not necessarily required for preparation for CH 111. Biology: As of right now, we require BI 111 for the industrial hygiene major, and many of the chemistry majors will choose biology as the minor. We don’t often put them in biology and chemistry the first semester (fall), but may do so in the spring. There is an ACT pre-requisite for BI 111, so if they don’t meet that requirement, they do have to drop down to take BI 101 first. For industrial hygiene, they need BI 111, 241, 242, and 307. They can wait until the second year to start this sequence if needed. Industrial Hygiene: The first course is IH 301. It would be highly unlikely that anyone would take an IH course in addition to this one in their first year. Although there is not official pre-requisite, the department really likes to see that they have had some chemistry first, so this could be a spring class for the first year, or else just wait until the second year. Communications COM 201 Fundamentals of Speech has a prerequisite: minimum English ACT score of 16, or satisfactory completion of EN 099 or higher. Criminal Justice Criminal Justice majors must complete the following two courses are part of their Area IV. Requirements for the General Education component: • PY 201 (3) General Psychology • SO 221 (3) Introductory Sociology English All students with a score of 15 or below on the ACT English Subtest or 410 or below on the SAT English Subtest are required to enroll in English 099, Basic English, as the first course in English. EN 099 is a noncredit course which counts for the equivalent of three credit hours on the schedule load and for which only grades of S (Satisfactory) and U (Unsatisfactory) are reported. A student receiving a grade of S advanced to the credit sequence beginning with EN 111, First Year Composition I. A student receiving a grade of U may repeat the course. After the second term in English 099, the student, no matter what the grade, must proceed to the credit sequence beginning with EN 111. The regular sequence of English courses is EN 111 or 121 (First Year Composition I or First Year Composition I Honors), EN 112 or 122 (First Year Composition II or First Year Composition II Honors), EN 211 – 212 (English Literature I and II), EN 221 – 222 (American Literature I and II), EN 231 – 232 (World Literature I and II), or EN 233 – 234 (World Literature I Honors and World Literature II Honors). EN 221 and EN 222 are required for English Option III: Language Arts. 5 College of Business All students with majors in the College of Business must complete the following specific courses as part of their General Education component: Area IV: EC 251 (3) Principles of Macroeconomics EC 252 (3) Principles of Microeconomics College of Education and Human Sciences Elementary Education Elementary Education majors must complete the following specific courses as part of their General Education component: Area III: MA 100 (3) Intermediate Algebra or MA 105 (3) Introduction to Finite Mathematics BI 101 or BI 111 plus 8 additional semester hours in two different areas of Area III Sciences (12 hours total) Area IV: ED 299 (3) Human Growth and Development PY 201(3) General Psychology Secondary Education SBE/NCATE Approved teaching fields have very different requirements for the General Education Component. See current catalog for details. Human Environmental Sciences All HES majors must complete HES 100 and FYE 101 their first fall semester they are enrolled. HES Therapeutic Nutrition majors must also take the following specific courses as part of their General Education component: Area III: MA 110 or MA 112 CH 101 and CH 102 Area IV: EC 251 (3) Principles of Macroeconomics or EC 252 (3) Principles of Microeconomics PY 201(3) General Psychology 6 College of Nursing Nursing majors must complete the following specific courses as part of their General Education component: Area III: CH 101-102 or BI 111-112 (or BI 101 or 102) Area IV: ED 299 (3) Human Growth and Development PY 201 (3) General Psychology
