Descriptive ENG 110 Spring 2010 Openings A sudden squeak of the door startled and excited me at the same time while watching the cable go in and out. Examples: She gets up at four thirty before the baby wakes up. The baby wakes up at five o'clock in the morning. Use numerals with the time of day when exact times are being emphasized or when using A.M. or P.M. Examples: Monib's flight leaves at 6:22 A.M. Please arrive by 12:30 sharp. She had a 7:00 P.M. deadline. Numbers/Time Rules Spell out single-digit whole numbers. Use numerals for numbers greater than nine. Examples: I want five copies. I want 10 copies. We wake up around 5:30am… For my seventeenth birthday… We had to take a 15 minute ferry ride… …only lasted a mere 10 minutes as I experienced getting my first tattoo 2 days after… Descriptive (Senses) All I could hear was the sound of raindrops hitting the roof and the wind blowing hard making the window shake each time. (sound) The open sign flickers sometimes and when it rains, the roof leaks and the sauce buckets that catch the water constantly need to be emptied outside. (sight, sound) I saw a very sleek green sports car so clean I could use it as a mirror. (sight) Descriptive (Senses) When you take your warm-up laps and you can feel the sharpness of your blade cut into the smooth ice. (sound and feeling) There wasn’t a cloud in the sky and the wind blew just enough to cool the sweat off your face, but not enough to give you a chill. (sight, feeling) …we tried to build a snowman which came out to look infected with some kind of disease. (sight)
