Descriptive Writing ENG 1010 Amy Raufman, Lecturer Cuyahoga Community College Description Descriptive writing creates a mental picture of a person, object, or scene by using: •Sensory language that appeals to the reader’s sense of smell, taste, touch, sight, and hearing. •Figurative language (like metaphors, similes, and personification) that suggests deeper meanings beyond a literal interpretation. •Spatial ordering to let the reader “see” the scene. The supporting details should be expressed in specific, sensory details. These supporting details are often arranged in spatial order. Look for these transitional words: nearby near to beside over far from next to under around through in front of behind surrounding alongside away from toward at Tips for a Strong Descriptive Essay --Focus on a dominant impression (this is your implied thesis) --Be selective about which details to include. You are in charge. --Consider the best principal of organization—spatial, chronological, emphatic, or sensory impression. Use signal words to keep your reader on track. --Use vivid sensory language and vary your sentence structure (active verbs, figurative language, etc)
