Higher-level Design and Technology Internal Assessment Page Count: Word Count: Criterion A: 1081 Criterion B: Criterion C: Criterion D: Criterion E: Criterion F: Talking with a reception teacher she said her 4–5-year-old pupils were having trouble to stay sat in their table to work and always standing up searching for materials. Kids aged 4 have an attention spam of no-more than 12 minutes in a row (Brainbalancecentrers, 2015), this makes it difficult for the teacher to teach. I was called to help and find a solution to try to maximize the kids’ attention span. Even though a bit of decorations helps with a kids focus but, a study conducted by Carnegie Mellon University they discovered that students in highly decorated classrooms were more distracted, spent more time off-task, and learned less than when the decorations were removed. So, the table must not have too many decorations. According to (abcpedriatictherapy, 2012), 5-year-old kids can attend to sat down task no more than 15 minutes. One of the factors is that kids get distracted looking for materials since they are not organized. This can help kids in the future to develop time management skills, to prioritize work. Ultimately, according to (Rackline, 2014) keeping a storage space for kids help them stay in focus and avoid thinking were they have left their stuff. Description Of the Problem (198 words)A1 Evidence; Photos of the Problem Scenario 1: Simplicity Problem 1: Simple tabletops may cause boredom for children and loose interest Scenario 2: Seat just for one Problem 2: Sitting alone, Sitting alone makes kids more eager to shout and loose focus. Scenario 3: Too many kids sit together Problem 3: Too many kids together may cause distraction amongst them and loose focus Children distracted in personal tables. Children distracted in big tables with no decorations. sharp edges. A 1.2 It should be made from appropriate materials. C hazard, especially to reception-grade kids. Schools will prefer to buy smooth-edged tables to keep their students safer. Upenn have determined that a toddlers skull is an eighth as strong as a adult one. Pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov, a coconut can represent a human skull. Drop the coconut onto the edge with height intervals of 10cm until it breaks or has a dent. 1.3 Must have silicone cups beneath the leg to prevent it from slipping. B Anti-slip caps will make the table safer since it will prevent it to slip. This will be tested by trying to drag the table around the room with the silicone caps on. 2. Performance 2.1 It must be ergonomically designed for a 3-5- year-olds B Most parents will prefer to buy a stool which does not need any tools to be assemble because it is easier and less time consuming The effectiveness of the assembling can be evaluated during user testing trials 3. Environment 3.1 Made to reduce waste during the disassembly process A Easy separation enables the replacement, reuse, or recycling of pieces during disposal. Evaluate the ease of disassembly through a solid model 3.2 Materials that encourage lifespan must be used. A Furniture contributes with nine million tons of waste to landfills which is roughly 1/19 of all waste generating a harmful environment. Determine the percentage of material reduced/ lifespan of product 4. Manufacture and Scale of Production 4.1 The product must have a maximum of three manufacturing process to be made. B This product is targeting all toddlers so the product must be designed for 5th all the way to the 95th percentile market For a feasibility analysis, the equipment utilized to make the prototype will be recorded and compared to mass machinery. 5. Aesthetics 5.1 The color palette for harmony must include vibrant and warm tones. C The table will be half blue and half pink. The color blue is connected to calmness and serenity. It creates a feeling of relaxation and radiated peace. Boys are more attracted to the colour blue. Pink is that color Observe how users respond to various color schemes. Conducting user trials. that evokes empathy and happiness in a child’s mind. Girls are more attracted to the colour pink. It radiates feminine energy, sweetness, and happiness. (Ecoleglobale) 5.2 It must be visually appealing. B This is reflected in the user survey analysis Focus groups can be used to discuss aesthetic pleasure. 5.3 The table will show two animals, a dinosaur and a pony. D This animals were chosen by both boys and girls aged between 4 to 9. A user research was conducted via Google forms and in person questionnaires. The outcome clrearly showed that dinousaur and poney won by twice as the second place making it a “fan favourite” increasing the odds of a toddler liking the table. 6. Function 6.1 The table height must be 53cm ±1cm. This is meant for the 50th percentile. A An average toddler aged 4-5 have a height of 104cm according to (disabled-world). Observe how user reactions to product through user trials 6.2 The table must be able to fit four students. A According to a kindergarten teacher in my school, kids work better when in fourlets than any other combination. To see if the table can occupy 4 kids we will examine this in the user trials. 6.3 Table must have place to store object. A According to the kindergarten teacher students get up 10 times to ask for materials wasting time and and reducing their attention spam During user trials, when childern have quick access to materials without needing to standing up. 6.4 Compartment size of storage. 40cmx30cmx15cm B The size of 40cmx30cmx15cm is the perfect size for a compartment according to scdf.gov.sg By using perpetual mapping we could aquire the best adequate size of the compartment and this could be seen in the user trials. 7. User 7.1 It must be user- friendly in terms of ergonomics. D This will increase the product's usability and long-term viability by making it more appealing to use. A user trial can be carried out in the context of usage, when product ergonomics is often evaluated. 8. Materials 8.1 When conducting market research we discovered that between the available material (plastic and plywood) teachers and parents preferred plywood over plastic. A Plywood helps furniture weigh less since it is lighter than most woods. Since the layers of plywood are so thin, they neither absorb nor emit moisture. They neither grow nor shrink as a result of this. Weighting the plywood. Quality management. Leaving procced plywood in the open for one month because according to wagnermeters.com wood takes approximatley one month for wood to absorb moisture. It will determine how long does the wood last 8.2 Pinewood is the chosen material for the legs B Pinewood helps the furniture legs to be more stable and strong. I will resist more damage made by kids. By doing a durability test on pinewood. This can also be tested by user trials. 9. Cost 9.1 The product must not cost more than 75 dollars. It should not cost more than 50 dollars to produce. This means every table sold will result in a 25% revenue making the product optimum. A To target the mass market and enable for significant sales, the product must be priced competitively with the competitors. As comparing prices to Amazon.com we concluded that schools would pay around $70- $90 per table. Justifying our price choice. This will be determined using the entire expenses (consider the production and material costs) of the functioning prototype's production. By using perceptual mapping it was possible to get the values of a table and the revenue it generates. 10. Target Market 10.1 Target market, Private and public schools which have a kindergarten section. B As a high school student I have access to teachers, parents and supervisors my target audience, early year students. This will help my research be more accurate and to develop a more rounded design. The following market research ideas will take place to better understand audience, user trial, perceptual mapping, user research, expert appraisal Order of priority in meeting expectations: 1. Performance 2. Function 3. Safety 4. User 5. Materials 6. Cost 7. Manufacture and Scale of Production 8. Environment 9. Aesthetic Idea 1 B1 Wooden leg length: 53cm long Material of legs: Pinewood Thickness of legs: 4.5cm x 4.5cm. Ensures safety for children No Sharp edges: Prevent damage to Little kids. Sharp edges can cause serious damage Gives extra support to the table Warm and vibrant colours to imporve kids attention spam. The color blue is connected to calmness and serenity. It creates a feeling of relaxation and radiated peace. The choice of blue is reflected on the survey Pink is that color that evokes empathy and happiness in a child’s mind. Material table top: Plywood Engraved dinosaurs to grap the atttention of kids. Aimed for boys. Engraved ponies to grab the atttention of kids. Aimed for girls. Girls preferred ponies, according to the survey Legs and table will connect via a Mortise and Tennon joint. The table's shape allows four to five kids to sit in together. According the rasingchildren.net, kids aged four should not sit with more than 3 friends or they will get distracted easily.
