Steve Carter CE 474 Assignment A1.03 9-7-04 Design Guidelines for Deploying Closed Loop Systems This manual discusses the many signals and signal systems owned and maintained by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT). These traffic systems are referred to closed loop systems. The intent in preparing this manual is to reduce the time spent on designing, employing, and maintaining signal controllers of the signal systems. With that intent, the manual includes the best practices in current use as design examples. This manual is also to serve as an informative tool to new IDNOT employees. 1. Chapter 1 – Introduction This chapter gives a conceptual overview of what a closed loop system is and how they are designed. 2. Chapter 2 – Closed Loop System Design Procedures The objective of this chapter is to provide direction with the design of controller timing parameters. 3. Chapter 3 – Configuring Econolite Closed Loop Traffic Signal Systems Chapter 3 of the manual shows step-by-step how to configure Econolite controllers to implement closed loop systems. 4. Chapter 4 – Configuring Peak Closed Loop Traffic Signal Systems This chapter covers how to configure peak controllers to run a closed loop system. 5. Chapter 5 – Hardware-in-the-loop Simulation For Testing Controllers Chapter 5 discussed the necessary programs and procedures required to run the traffic simulation. 6. Chapter 6 – Field Tuning Closed Loop Systems This chapter discusses how to monitor and adjust the controller for the closed loop system based on the system’s performance. 7. Chapter 7 – Conclusions This chapter gives a brief overview of the chapters covered.
