Nitrification Wastewater Treatment Plant Design: CE 432/532 Lab Project, Lab Reports of Civil Engineering

A lab project for designing a nitrification wastewater treatment plant using mathcad activated sludge worksheet. The project involves analyzing treatment efficiency over different srt ranges, plotting various efficiencies against srt, and recommending an operational scheme based on given influent and effluent criteria. The document also includes submittal requirements for a technical memorandum.

CE 432/532 Design Problem Nitrification Wastewater Treatment Plant Design Due: October 17, 2008 Utilizing the MathCAD Activated Sludge design worksheet provided on our course web site, add nitrification capabilities. This worksheet is set up to analyze 4 CSTRs in series. The worksheet is a mass balance-based analysis of an activated sludge treatment system; the worksheet is already complete for organic carbon removal. You have previously been provided a schematic diagram. Once you have set up your worksheet, analyze treatment efficiency over an SRT range of 2-25 days and develop the following plots: • SRT vs effluent sCOD • SRT vs effluent NH3-N • SRT vs average MLVSS • SRT vs average heterotrophic biomass • SRT vs average autotrophic biomass • SRT vs total oxygen demand • For SRTs of 10, and 25 days, plot (both SRTs on the same plot) o sCOD per basin o NH3-N per basin o MLVSS per basin o Oxygen demand per basin Complete the above analyses for the following reactor operational configurations: CAS, Step Feed, Contact Stabilization. Finally, recommend an operational scheme for the influent and effluent criteria below. Defend your recommendation, including specifying minimum operational criteria. Maximum Monthly Flow = 0.716 mgd Average Dry Weather Flow = 0.372 mgd NPDES Effluent Limitations Parameter Average Monthly BOD5 and TSS 30 mg/L, 113 lbs/day 85% removal of influent concentrations NH3-N 2.0 mg/L, 14 lb/day (Nov-Mar) 1.0 mg/L, 3.7 lb/day (Apr-Oct) Influent Wastewater Characteristics Parameter Influent Concentration (mg/L) Average Influent Mass Load (lb/day) Maximum Influent Mass Load (lb/day) Per Capita, Average (lb/person/day) Per Capita, Range (lb/person/day) BOD5 110 355 575 0.123 0.07 – 0.20 NH3-N 13.7 -- -- -- -- TSS 132 410 719 0.143 0.08 – 0.25 D:\My Documents\ERC Academics\CE 432\Lab Problems\2008\Tertiary-N WWTP Design.doc
