OBJECTIVES Content Standard: The learners demonstrate understanding of the digestive system and its interaction with the circulatory, respiratory, and excretory systems in providing the body with nutrients for energy. Performance Standard: The learners transfer the learning by present an analysis of the data gathered on diseases resulting from nutrient deficiency. Learning Competency: 1. S8LT-IVa13 - The learners should be able explain ingestion, absorption, assimilation, and excretion; 2. S8LT-IVc15 - identify healthful practices that affect the digestive system. II. CONTENT Topic: Organs of the digestive system and their interaction with organs of the respiratory, circulatory, and excretory systems A. Learning Resources: 1. K-12 Curriculum Guide in Science page: 147 2. Science 8 (Learner’s Module), pages: 291-295; 304-305 B: Other resources: Websites 1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBZWgrfZFbU 2. https://www.niddk.nih.gov/health-information/digestive-diseases/digestive-system-how-it- works C. Learning Materials: powerpoint presentation, video presentation, projector/television, laptop, cartolina, marker, chalk, disposable glasses, candies, straw, and warm water. Valuing: Taking care of oneself. III.PROCEDURE A. Preliminary Activities 1. Prayer 2. Energizer 3. Checking of Attendance 4. Recalling of the Classroom Rules: 5 P’s B. Developing Activity Activity 1. Drill The teacher will show a picture: Process Questions: 1. What nutrients we can get in eating these food? 2. What will you do to get the nutrients from this food? C. Activity/Motivation Activity 2. Let’s Label it! The teacher will show a picture of the structure of the Human Digestive System. The class will identify and label the parts of the picture. D. Analysis Process Questions: 1. What are the functions of the parts you have identified? 2. What are the other body systems interacts/helps the digestive system? E. Abstraction From their ideas of the parts and function of the digestive system, the teacher will further explain how the ingested food will be absorbed and assimilate through the help of circulatory system and how the waste products will be excreted. Activity 3. Human Digestive System (Video Presentation) Process Questions: 1. What is the difference of ingestion and absorption? 2. What body system will help to assimilate the nutrients that we have digested? 3. Why it is important to excrete the waste product of digestion? Activity 5. Sweet Break! The class will be divided into two and will be given the following items: Disposable glasses, warm water, spoon, crushed candy & uncrushed candy. Place one piece of candy into the glass of warm water labelled A and place the crushed pieces of candy in the remaining glass of warm water labelled B. Stir for 1-3 minute. Observe how long it takes for the whole candy in Glass A and the crushed pieces of candy in Glass B to dissolve. Process Questions: 1. How does crushing the candy to smaller pieces affect its dissolution? 2. What does crushing the candy represent in the process of digestion? F. Application Activity 4. Think Healthy! Live Healthy! (Video Presentation-Larva) The class will be divided into two groups, each group will be given a 1 sheet of cartolina and marker to make a table. For 5 minutes, they will list down on the first column all the foods (fruits/vegetables/dairy products & etc.) which they think gives nutrients to the body. For the second column they will write the nutrients/vitamins/minerals they can get from the foods they have listed. In the third column they will list down what disease they can get if they are lack of nutrients/vitamins/minerals from the food they listed. For the fourth column, they will list down what body system may be affected from the diseases they have listed from the third column. Example: Name of Food/s Nutrients Content If Nutrient Deficient: Diseases Affected body system
