Review about expressionism and abstractionism. Based on the previous lessons, how will you define Abstract Expressionism? Activity 10 mins World Mapping The teacher will show a world map and will ask the student volunteers to point the countries where modern art movements of the early 20th century were found. 1. In what countries do modern art movements of the early century were found? * France, Spain, Germany, Italy The teacher will then ask another volunteer to locate New York City on the map. After locating New York City, the teacher will point out to the class that this traces the “migration” of the modern art movements from Europe to North America in the mid-1900s. Analysis 10 mins. The teacher will let the students read the pages 214 to 219 in 5 minutes. Let them read about abstract expressionism, pop art and op art. (Less time is needed since they have read this when they answered their assignment). After 5 minutes, the teacher will let the learners do the following: 1. Describe the art movement that came to be known as “The New York School.” The teacher will also ask the following questions: • What were the two art movements that emerged from The New York School? * Color Field Painting and Action Painting • Why were action painting and color field painting given these names? • Who was the artist who became famous for his action painting style? • What is conceptual art? • From where did pop art draw its subject? • Name the foremost artists of the pop art movement. Abstraction 10 mins. Strengthening the Concept 1. The teacher will present a sample melted crayon artwork and will let the learners describe how such an artwork is made.
