This lecture outline from geography 2440: economic geography covers the concepts of development, problems of less developed countries and regions, and various development strategies. Topics include defining development through gross product, labor force, education, health, consumer goods, urbanization, and the un's human development index. Challenges faced by less developed countries are discussed, such as rapid population growth, un- and under-employment, low labor productivity, lack of capital and investment, technology, access to land, terms of trade, foreign debt, gender roles, and corruption. Three major perspectives on development are presented: ww rostow’s modernization theory, dependency theory, and world-systems theory. Strategies for development include expanding trade with ldcs, private capital flows, foreign aid, import-substitution industrialization, and the un millenium development goals.
