Digital Media File Setup This document describes how to set up and use a submit client for the HPC project’s configuration of the BOINC-based Maya parallel rendering server. This documentation assumes that the submit client is being installed on a Windows host. Currently, there are no procedures for installing this software on a *nix host. Prerequisite files: • HPC_submit.bat – part of the HPC’s Maya parallel rendering distribution • HPC_render_submit.exe – part of the HPC’s Maya parallel rendering distribution • testscript.bat – part of the HPC’s Maya parallel rendering distribution • sleep.exe – the Windows CLI-based port of the Unix sleep utility. Can be obtained as freeware from sourceforge.net, as part of the UnxUtils distribution. Required by testscript.bat • 7z.exe – 7-zip file/directory compression application. Distributed as freeware over the Internet. Begin by placing the following four files in a common directory: • HPC_Submit.bat • HPC_render_submit.exe • Sleep.exe • 7z.exe (7zip application for hpc_render_submit) Next, create a folder named temp at one level below the folder that contains HPC_Submit. For example, if you’ve placed your scripts in C:\Program Files\HPC, name this folder C:\Program Files\HPC\temp. Then, add the folder that contains HPC_Submit.bat and the remaining four files to your host machine’s path variable. In Windows XP, you can do this by • opening the Control Panel on the start menu; • opening the “System Properties” menu under the Control Panel • selecting the “Advanced” tab • selecting “Environment variables” on the advanced tab • selecting the variable named “Path” under System variables • selecting “Edit” • appending a semicolon, followed by the name of the directory, to the path: e.g., ;C:\Program Files\ HPC, if that’s your chosen installation directory • repeatedly selecting “OK” to back out of the open tabs and windows, and confirm your choice After this procedure is complete, you can use HPC_Submit from a DOSShell (i.e., Windows command) prompt. Under Windows XP, you can do this by • opening a DOSShell command window, by • selecting the “Run” command in the start menu • entering cmd in the window’s open • selecting “OK” • entering the following command in the resultant DOSShell window: HPC_Submit “<maya commands>”
