Discussion Guide: Personalized Learning The term digital learning or personalized learning can refer to a broad range of services, tools, and curricular models designed to create individualized learning for students. The concept intersects—and overlaps—with notions including adaptive learning, differentiated instruction, competency-based education, and analytics. Personalized learning is intended to provide a unique, highly focused learning path for each student. If a student receives individual attention from an instructor, the lessons, feedback, and assessments will necessarily be tailored to that student’s strengths and weaknesses. Such attention does not scale in traditional educational environments, and proponents of personalized learning maintain that IT systems and tools, along with rich data sets and analytics programs, can provide individualized learning pathways to large numbers of students. Personalized learning creates lifelong learners - Our students need to be prepared for a world with universal access to information, where the trick is not finding the information, but understanding it and applying it to improve our work and lives. We need to teach them how to learn. Republic of the Philippines Pangasinan State University School of Advanced Studies Urdaneta City, Pangasinan Personalized Learning increases student engagement - A recent gallup poll shows that as students get older, they become increasingly less engaged in typical schools. Personalized learning shifts this in two ways: through making meaningful connections between teachers and students we increase student engagement, and through making learning more relevant we make it more engaging too. Personalized learning increases student achievement - Through personalized learning, students spend more time in their zone of proximal development and teachers spend more time addressing the needs of each student. With increased understanding of the types of supports students need, teachers can provide more targeted instruction and support, resulting in higher student achievement. Personalized learning is what our students deserve - Students deserve equitable opportunities and supports to be successful and realize their fullest potential; they deserve opportunities to bring their whole selves to the learning experience. Personalized learning is the future of learning Benefits of Personalized Learning More efficient and effective learning More time for teachers to focus on each student More prepared for college, career and citizenship: Key Elements of Personalized Learning 1. Student Reflection and Ownership - encourages a focus on metacognitive strategies for learning and prompts students to pursue their passions and ownership of their work 2. Data-Driven Decisions - allows teachers and students to understand and act on their strengths and needs 3. Targeted Instruction - provides a critical structure for teachers and students to problem-solve with one another and meet individual learning goals 4. Flexible Content and Tools - creates a mix of resources responsive to student needs and interests that allows for differentiated path, pace and performance tasks
