Course Description: This is an advanced level course of directed readings in Chinese language and culture for student who has achieved fluency in oral presentation, proficiency in reading and writing, and good command in grammar. It is intended to further develop and refine student’s ability to read and write in Chinese through extensive reading and writing practices. Reading texts include Chinese classics, traditional and contemporary poetry, idiom story, newspaper, etc. Prerequisites: CHI 299 or equivalent or permission of the instructor Objectives/Goals: The goals of this course are the following: To expand vocabulary and improve accurate comprehension To further develop the ability of processing complex sentences. To familiarize with oral and written expression used in formal context To advance speaking skills and writing skills. 2 Learning Outcomes: At the end of the semester, the students should be able to: 1. express their ideas appropriately in Chinese 2. read and comprehend Chinese text with an in-depth understanding 3. write Chinese characters at ease and compose longer essays 4. have a relatively comprehensive understanding of Chinese cultures and values 5. further improve communicative skills. Grade Distribution: 90-100 = A 80-89 = B 70-79 = C 60-69 = D 59 and below = F Classroom participation and homework 15 % Reading responses: 20 % Writing composition: 20 % Research Project: 15 % Exam 1 15 % Exam 2 15 % Classroom participation and homework (15%) Class attendance is mandatory. Any absence is going to affect student’ class participation and final grade. Ten minutes late will be considered one absence. Likewise, leaving early will count as an absence. You will be graded on the following factors in class: Being well-prepared for class and vocabulary dictation Participating actively in exercises and activities Using Chinese in the classroom Being positive You’re required to read the text of each lesson, including vocabulary, grammar, idiom story, and culture link) carefully, paying special attention to sentence pattern, complex structure, and some culture-specific expressions. Homework, such as lesson exercise, character writing, reading comprehension, will be checked or graded in the next class. All the homework must be written on paper.
