Q: In recent years, many tourist destinations have suffered from the negative effects of tourism. Discuss the causes and effects of mass tourism. Taking holiday in foreign countries multiply times a year become more and more common for the masses as it can bring many benefits. On the other hand, it produces some serious problems. It caused by mainly economic reasons, but the negative effects make itself unsustainable as a business model. Owing to the cheap airfares, traveling is now much more affordable then the past. Moreover, by the promotion of media, traveling and exploring around the world become a popular life style, people are more willing to spend money on it. Consequently, many different kind of related business, like advertising, tourism and service industries, make lots of money. Many governments hold campaigns and change their policies to attract more tourists, in order to make a better economic growth for their countries. However, in these few years, people started to suffer from the scourges of the consequence of it. First of all, the sight spots are overcrowded. When landmarks cannot be viewed, wild lives are scared away, the narrow lanes in the small towns are jammed because of the crowds, not only the tourist experiences are degraded, but also the original lives of local residents, the wild animals and environments are seriously affected. In a long run, it will also bring extensive environmental damage and pollution due to the huge amount of garbage and exhaust gas produced by the dense traffic. Another drawback from the mass tourism is the unhealthy economic development of a country or city. Hong Kong is one of cities which commercially depend quiet a lot on the tourists from China in this 10 years after the global financial crisis in 2008.
