Describe the five contexts of communication and list an example of each that I have witnessed recently. Also, describe which context appeals to me the most and least of the five. After the eight components of communication comes the five contexts. The contexts as described below are: Intrapersonal Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Group Communication, Public Communication, and Mass Communication. Intrapersonal Communication is the type of communication someone has with themselves. The time your inner voice critiqued someone you were speaking to, when you talked yourself though a difficult situation, gave yourself internal encouragement, or reasoned with yourself over eating that last pastry are all examples of Intrapersonal Communication. I am using Intrapersonal Communication as I write this paper to determine if what I am writing is correct or if it needs to be edited. If it sounds good to me in my head it should sound ok to you as you read this... I hope. Interpersonal Communication is the form of communication that is a one-on-one exchange between two people. This type of communication tends to be of a more personal level but can be impersonal as well. Interpersonal communication between family members is more intimate while a discussion between co-workers is not. I used Interpersonal Communication today at the office and at home with my family before heading to my room to write this paper. My conversation with my co-worker was concerning his schedule for tomorrow while my family talk was centered around them and their personal feelings and actions. Group Communication is the communication that occurs between a small number of people (usually three to eight individuals) who have some type of commonality. This may include friends, co-workers, or just strangers who came together due to a shared interest like a hobby group. I engaged in Group Communication today during our department meeting. We were a group of people brought together by our occupation to collaborate on accomplishing a common goal. We discussed each other’s personal objectives as well overall group tasks. Public Communication is the most feared of all types of communication. The most dreaded example is when a speaker must deliver a message in front of a large crowd. Other, less despised, forms of Public Communication include written communication, discussions, or announcements given to a large group of people. My most recent example of group communication was when I hosted a project kickoff with multiple constructions firms. I discussed the details of the project and the bid platform to a group of about twenty construction managers. Mass Communication is the final context of communication. This form of communication occurs when a Source sends a message to many people as a whole without it being directed at any specific individual. The most frequent form of Mass Communication we see is in the form of newspaper or TV broadcasts. The messages are designed to be broadcast to many people to attempt to convey the intent of the Source. The most recent example I have is from our breakroom at work where I watched part of a news broadcast on TV while getting a cup of coffee this morning.
