Dr. Giuliano Russo Lecturer in Global Health Centre for Primary Care and Public Health, Queen Mary University of London. Interests in workshop: Because of his expertise in health systems research and Brazil’s health sector, multidisciplinary team of researchers, publication record, ongoing working relations with Brazilian universities, he would like to establish long-lasting research partnerships with universities in Brazil. The workshop will be a great opportunity to explore further links with Brazilian research institutions on global health education and research. Dr Ivor Langley Operational Research Analyst Centre for Allied Health Research and Delivery Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) Primary interest in attending the workshop is to understand the research questions of the academic, policy and implementation communities on strengthening health systems in Brazil. Then to match these to the expertise of LSTM (including my own and areas such as community-based and gender based approaches in health-service delivery) leading to partnership bids for funding innovative and policy-relevant research addressing these research questions. Josephine Borghi Associate Professor of Health System Economics Department of Global Health and Development London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, Interests in workshop: To meet potential collaborators for the forthcoming MRC call for proposals, and to represent the variety of research interests at the School in relation to the study of health systems in Brazil. Dr. Cristina Santos Innovation and International Development Diretor Central Academic Staff Lecturer in Economics Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences School of Polis, Phil, Econ, Dev, Geog Economics Interests in workshop: To foster future collaborations with Brazilian institutes and explore effective solutions to several challenges of both countries’ health systems, in particular: a) Underperformance in terms of diagnosis and screening of hidden diseases – such as mental health conditions, or diseases with lower but extreme effects, and often argued to be lifestyle dependent – such as lung cancer or diabetes; b) Effective use of health human resources, such as front line workers and in particular, General Practitioners (GPs) the reliance on GPs and nurses as referral and diagnostic tools presents challenges in terms of workload and work quality. Evidence suggests often success diagnostic rates of GPs are lower than of electronic software applications; c) Equity and universality, health systems strengthening, and price regulation - how health systems respond to universal coverage and how incentives can be put in place to safeguard quality and access to affordable health services. This team can provide the analysis of market and sectoral behaviour and outcomes of health insurers, private health providers, and the analysis of patients’ behaviour and which can lead such global discussions. Max Bachmann Professor of Health Services Research and Head of Department of Population Health & Primary Care Norwich Medical School University of East Anglia, Interests in workshop: To expand our collaborative network and our health systems research in Brazil as to promote evidence-based policy innovation. Michael Calnan Professor of Medical Sociology and Director of Studies, School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research University of Kent, Interests in workshop: The aim is to carry out comparative research in Brazil (CONITEC) and other LMICs with different regulatory systems to explore the social influences on processes and outcomes. Pia Riggirozzi Associate Professor in Global Politics University of Southampton, Politics and International Relations Interests in workshop: Seek cross-institutional collaboration, alongside new strategic partnerships in Brazil to develop interdisciplinary methods of research in support of (i) innovative and robust conceptual frameworks for understanding of health-social justice nexus in support of well- being, quality of life, identity and social and cultural values of local communities; (ii) reflect on the future of interdisciplinary research on long-term consequences of health-poverty nexus and policy needs of developing countries in order to meet the SDG targets by 2030.
