Constructing Drawing with a free hand is like dancing on paper…Producing a drawing with instruments is an altogether more disciplined, modularized activity. William J. Mitchell Improvisations, Instruments, and Algorithms The drafter’s pencil should be, in a very real sense, a part of him[her]self, an extension of his [her] hand. Pencil Points The act of drawing is often the first act of a building’s construction. In this introductory exercise, you will investigate the act of constructing on paper as facilitated by the drafter’s tools: the drawing board, parallel bar, scale, compass, triangle, lead holder, pointer, scale, drafting tape, and paper. Ex 5.0b invites you to practice a series of drafting skills on 12”x18” vellum sheets to build consistency and precision in your work. Repeat the exercises until you have achieved a level of confidence, then submit this full set of investigations to your instructor for a pass/fail grade. The construction of a single straight line demands the simplest tool set. A surface, an edge, and instrument to make the mark. Susan Piedmont-Palladino Circles and Spheres, Tools of the Imagination Set up. Clean the desktop and bar. Level the bar. Tape down the paper. Measure. Pull a vertical line up the left margin. Mark off a series of 1’-0” measure points using each of the different scales on the architectural scale tool: Mark 1’ at 1/16”=1’-0”, at 1/8”=1’-0”, at 1/4”=1’-0”, at 3/16”=1’-0”, at 3/32”=1’-0”, at 3/8”=1’-0”, at 3/4”=1’-0”, at 1/2”=1’-0”, at 1”=0”, at 1-1/2”=1’-0”, at 3”=1’-0”. A line is a dot that goes for a walk. Paul Klee Twirl. Pull a vertical line as a right margin. Then pull lines across, practicing a twirl between the thumb and forefinger. Mark beginnings and ends of lines. Practice until you can maintain crisp and consistent lines using multiple leads to achieve multiple line weights – all crisp and consistent. Practice a variety of line types: short dash, long dash, and centerlines.
