Haylee Theriot EDTC 100 October 26, 2007 Philosophy of Education Lifelong learning is the concept of learning that enhances and contributes to skills already attained. Professional development is an aspect of lifelong learning, and teaching is a significant component of learning. The greatest gift a teacher could give a student is that of lifelong learning. It is important for a teacher to show students how to construct their own thoughts and develop a level of critical thinking. Students should learn from their mistakes and realize making mistakes is part of learning. The more children are used to making their own decisions at an early age, the better they will grow as they become adults. If what students are learning is meaningful and they are involved in the learning process, they will retain the information longer. Therefore, getting students to be interested and to become a part of what they are learning is essential for successful teaching. The qualities of a positive relationship are important to set a learning experience approachable for the students to learn. A teacher and student, who share good communication, respect, and show interest in teaching from the teacher’s point of view and learning from the students’ will establish a positive relationship. Positive relationships in the classroom will increase self-esteem, as well as academic success. Children have different strategies for learning; therefore, teachers must adjust and have a variety of strategies for teaching.
