Effective Police Supervision Department of Criminal Justice, Purdue University CRJ345 Supervisory Practices in Criminal Justice When comparing and contrasting Baker 3 to other patrol units, Baker 3 focuses on community-oriented policing which requires officers to be more interactive with the community in order to reduce any fear and keep a peaceful environment.Being assigned to COP had its disadvantages when it came to being evaluated because it had to be impartial when evaluated and compared to regular officers doing their routine job. The appraisal method I choose is the critical incident method because this method involves in identifying, classifying and recording significant employee behaviors.(Braswell, L.S.M.H.W.M.M. C. 2017). In my opinion this method would work best to propose it to the captain. This method has categories to record the employee’s performance. It provides employee’s weaknesses and strengths. The advantages for this method includes the organization of behavior descriptions as lengthy narratives can quickly become very disorganized. (Daniel Shephard) There are human errors that can occur during an evaluation process. Six human errors include the error of leniency, the error of central tendency, the halo effect, the error of bias, the contrast error and the recency error. Two of the errors that I chose are error of leniency and the halo effect. I would avoid these errors by not allowing personal considerationsand avoiding people from speculating about favoritism. The halo effect would be avoided by not allowing isolated traits or incidents to dominate their performance. The best features of the evaluation process that can help in assist the validity and reliability of the results are being able to record and evaluate data to be able to measure the quantity and quality of the employee by using performance standards. By being able to observe and evaluating the employee’s job, it can influenced by the skills of the evaluator. It is important to follow appropriate steps to increase the performance appraisals for Baker 3.The other feature for evaluation would be to provide correct specific problems and improve the employees overall performance.
