For over eighty years the self-driving method was created and changed over time. This feature in some vehicles requires no gas pedal motion and no actual guidance by the driver. EH 1010 Driverless Vehicles Columbia Southern University EH 1010 Driverless vehicles As technology advances around us so do our lives as well. For over eighty years the self-driving method was created and changed over time. This feature in some vehicles requires no gas pedal motion and no actual guidance by the driver. Different models use laser sensors and 360°-degree cameras to help assist the vehicle in motion. Some may say that this is an unsafe method of driving. Tons of information support the argument that driverless vehicles are a bit safer than a human behind the wheel. Self-driving cars will not only reduce traffic but also reduce risk on the road. Not just by making the road safer for drivers this function offers many benefits for drivers. Some drivers decide to choose to drink and drive and get behind the wheel and risk the lives of others including their own. Other drivers travel miles and miles and sometimes fall asleep at the wheel due to fatigue. Driverless vehicles could change all of that. Though it is not made legal yet, self-driving vehicles will take away the accidents involving alcohol and even tiredness. According to Katharina Buchholz (2020) in 2017 74% of Americans thought that driverless vehicles are unsafe. In 2020 the percentage dropped to 48%. The reason that people felt this way about driverless vehicles was that there was a study done in 2020 with the idea of driverless taxis. They started by making the fare free of charge to add an incentive to riders to see if they were more willing. According to Deloitte (2020), the people of China trusted the idea of driverless cars the most. After seeing the impact that it made there the United States got more onboard and felt the idea was safer after the experiment. According to Tesla their driverless vehicle option comes equipped with twelve ultrasonic sensors that offer detection of both soft and hard objects. The vehicles are made with 360-degree cameras that allow a full view of all objects around them. Tesla along with various other brands of driverless vehicles are made with automatic emergency braking, this feature can detect other vehicles, pedestrians, and any other object that can cause an accident. The vehicle can respond a lot faster than an actual driver can and automatically applies the brakes or lowers speed to avoid an accident. There is a sensor that causes an audio collision sound to warn the driver they are getting close to an object before automatically applying the brakes to give the driver enough time to adjust to the braking. With that being said people are becoming more aware of the impact that driverless vehicles can make. On top of the safety improvements, self-driving cars will also reduce traffic build-up. Many have been through the hassle of traffic build-up and stuck behind cars for several minutes. Not only does that waste gas and time, but even adds to the amount of frustration and road rage we already endure. Minimizing the negative impact of traffic and gas usage could improve the way we live in the future. There are a few people who still don’t believe that the idea of driverless cars is safe, and the effects of relying on technology driving for us is still unsafe. Driverless vehicles have a great deal to offer to the world other than safety and convenience. Some people still believe relying on technology to drive for them seems unsafe. Some people still are cautious about the fact technology can fail or with the question of how well they perform in hazardous weather. Others feel that driverless vehicles are not safe because of how well they adapt to the changes that are constantly happening to the road and how well they will react to detours. According to Vesttech, they question how well they will maneuver through the distorted painted line on the road. The reaction time of the technology is also in question, the normal reaction time for a regular car is around 2 seconds and if the technology may malfunction that reaction time could be increased by more and cause an accident that could have been avoided. It is very possible thing that something so opposed could make a large impact than we
