GROUP 10 RESEARCH WORK ALTERNATING CURRENT AND DIRECT CURRENT Alternating Current and Direct Current Definition Alternating Current: Is a form of current that changes both magnitude and direction in it's flow. Direct Current: This current flows in one direction only unlike the alternating current. Characteristics AC 1.Has frequency. 2.Amplitude. 3.Forms a sine curve Characteristics 1.has polarity 2.flows in a straight line. Sources of AC and DC AC is obtained from many sources, such as the Hydro Power Plant, Thermal Plant,Nuclear Power Plant and others. The generation of AC requires heavy machinery , hence current produce can be transmitted through long distances for public use. DC is also obtained from batteries, thermocouple, solar cells, dynamo and others. The current generated can not move through a long distance hence not for public use. How AC Is Generated In the diagram a conductor is being rorotated between two magnets of different poles. The magnet creates a magnetic field and this induces current flow in the conductor. For commercial production,a turbine is being rotated by hydro, thermal or nuclear reaction to induce current for transmission. Here the chemical reaction taking place in the solution cause the flow of electrons. The same process goes on in the battery. In the solution, there is a vigorous reaction at one electrode than the other. It's denoted as the anode and the other cathode. AC and DC Application Alternating Current has a wide range of advantages such as powering devices in our homes, workplaces and industries this happens due to it's travel distance so from the power station through a long way into our homes. Direct Current has it's own benefits, most of our electronic devices use direct current to operate, that is from our phones, laptops, watches and others. It is also used in cars for ignition to start the car engine. History on AC and Dc We can't talk about the history of AC and DC without talking about the war between Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla which is called the war of current In the year 1880’s and early 1890’s.In the early 1880’s Thomas Edison built a DC power while Nikola Tesla develop AC electricity between (1856 -1943).The war erropted when Edison saw that he is going to loose at the business market leading to the selling of Tesla's invention to Gorge Westinghouse.
