It is so concerning the horrible effects of the organ transplant list being so long, lower income individuals who are needing money go to the black market to sell organs to survive and the amount of people going to underdeveloped countries to get a transplant. It is an atrocity to be almost forced into a situation where you need to sell your own organs to make enough money to continue living. The wait list to receive an organ can take far too long. How can we fix the wait list and prevent black market sales of organs in underdeveloped counties? The waitlist for an organ transplant is obnoxiously long and can maybe keep someone on the waitlist for years. People are dying on the waitlist because they don’t have the funds to go through a black market like people with money. In the U.S. a kidney transplant alone cost about $400,000, and most of the time the organs are donated. I feel that if the costs here in the U.S. for transplants will go down, we wouldn’t have so many people exploited for their organs in third world countries. It is also hard to say how much money is being made because of money laundering involved, Either way it’s a sad issue. There are always going to be people with low income, rather if it’s in other countries or here in the US. However, it’s always going to be the wealthy people who can pay upfront with a lot of money. That is the truth, anything that is an underground business, can sometime be tricky on how they sell or what they sell. The poor seem to be a huge target but to be honest, that doesn’t necessarily mean that being poor one has to donate their organs for money, they can seek another way to make money, but sometimes that is what they believe it’s the easiest route for them to go. Life is hard in third world countries and when someone comes offering you money that you’ve never seen you’d hop on to do whatever it takes to provide for your family, especially when your funds are tight. Most people give up on themselves because the desperation gets to them. So therefore people go to the black market in order to find an organ faster but all in all the demand compared to the very limited supply is what causes people to seek out unethical means such as the black market. Lower-income people are being specifically targeted for their organs. How these people take advantage of lower-income families knowing they’ll sell their organs to clean debt or even just to put food on the table. People who travel to third world countries to get a transplant faster that is completely horrible. The WHO estimated that 10% of all global kidney transplants in 2004 were in patients from developed countries who traveled to economically challenged nations to buy organs. (AJKD, Tazeen H. Jafar, MD, MHP. 2009). Instead of these people waiting or seeking ethical ways to get a transplant they go and seek unethical roots. Not only are they putting themselves inn huge danger as they don’t 100% know if the transplant they are doing is safe. They are also putting this hopeless person in danger too just to save them put possibly kill them. It’s so sad to think that this third world counties go through this in order to get rid of debt that has probably been passed down generations and they’d just want to finally live comfortably for once but they don’t instantly think of the consequences that can happen with illegal organ trades. It is so
