English for Academic Purposes: Supplemental English Language Instruction for Non‐Native Speakers Prior to the beginning of the first semester of study, most international students will be required to take an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Placement Test administered on campus. All graduate students with TOEFL iBT scores under 100 or IELTS scores under 7.5 are required to take the EAP placement. Students whose test results reveal the need for additional English language instruction will be required to take an EAP course in addition to the regular course load at no additional cost to the student. You will have already received notification from the Office of International Affairs (or from the Graduate School) if you are required to take the EAP Placement Test. If you are not sure if you are required to take it, review your official admission letter once more. There is a $30 fee for all students taking the EAP placement exam, which must be paid in advance at the IUPUI Office of the Bursar. Keep your receipt! Placement tests must be completed before the end of orientation week. The Office of International Affairs has scheduled time for all new international graduate students to take the EAP Placement Test on Tuesday, August 18. Please refer to your schedule from the Office of International Affairs in your iStart account for more information. If you arrive after August 18, you will be asked to take the EAP Placement test on your own time no later than Thursday, August 20, and you must contact the IUPUI Testing Center as early as possible to schedule an appointment by calling +1‐317‐274‐2620. On the day of the exam, please check in at least 15 minutes before your scheduled time. Please also bring a photo ID, your 10‐digit student ID number (found on your admission letter), and the receipt from the Bursar. Although there is no time limit for the exam, it is best to plan for a total of three hours. Results of the placement test will be distributed during new LL.M. student orientation. Based on your results, there will be one of three outcomes: 1. You will be placed into ENG‐G411: Legal English I for Fall 2015 and ENG‐G412: Legal English II for Spring 2016. 2. You will be placed into ENG‐G412: Legal English II only for Fall 2015. 3. You will not have to enroll in an EAP course. English for Academic Purposes classes meet at the following times during the fall semester. Please plan accordingly when selecting your law classes.
