Essay 1: 8- very strong essay ● Has a solid thesis that addresses the question at the end of the introduction paragraph. ● Uses evidence to support thesis ○ Evidence is strongly relevant and quotes are integrated in context properly ● Writes a convincing analysis of the metaphor and the imagery within the poem ● Elevated vocabulary is able to adequately convey the complex ideas within the essay ● While the essay demonstrates the role of music in recalling memories in the poem well the language and word choice can be a bit inconsistent which is why it is an 8 not a 9 ● Uses an outside resource(neurological study) to help develop thesis Essay 2: 5- Decent essay with some missing parts and not sufficient analysis ● Has a strong thesis that addresses the style of the poem and the function of those styles, however was vague in its function in the poem. ● Average variety of vocab ● There is, in fact, no conclusion in this essay. ● This essay demonstrates the student’s ability to express ideas and references to the text. Although they do not exhibit the same level of effective writing as the 6-7 papers. The writer relies too heavily on the evidence and the analysis is not too in-depth. Essay 3: 3- poor essay missing a lot ● The introduction paragraph is subpar ● The thesis statement does not take on an argument and just states a general idea that is just poor ● No integration of quotes ● The conclusion has nothing to do with the argument nor the poem and does not restate a claim ● There is little analysis of the quotes used to argue her main point, the writer merely summarized the poem. ● The word choice was basic and showed a weak command of the English language ● There is only one body paragraph which leads to a limited variation in the ideas being discussed. This lends itself to an incomplete analysis of the work.
