Scientific method Observations Questions Hypothesis Predictions Test Results Fail to reject hypothesis results - hypothesis Reject hypothesis results - predictions 1. Observation 2. Question/Define Purpose • The thing you want to know question you want to answer 3. Construct Hypothesis • Educative guess or prediction of the outcome experiment. This guess can be tested by performing an experiment. • Ho Null Hypothesis • H1 - Alternative Hypothesis 4. Predictions and Collect Data • Perform the said experiment 5. Test/Analyze Data • Review and analyze the data you collect during the experiment 6. Results/Conclusion • Determine if your hypothesis was correct or not - For Example! Using the steps in the scientific method make a research proposal on the topic "Growing Bean Plants" Growing Bean Plants 1. Observation • How does this bean plant propagate? 2. Question/Define Purpose • I want to know if bean plant will grow more quickly outside or inside. 3. Construct Hypothesis • Null hypothesis: There is no difference between growing a bean plant indoors and outdoors. • Alternative Hypothesis: There is significant difference between growing a bean plant indoors and outdoors. 4. Predictions and Collect Data • Plant four bean plant in identical pots using the same type of soil. Place two of these in an outdoor location and place the other two in an indoor location. • Care the plants in an identical way, like giving the same amount of water. Then each day for the three weeks of experimental period. • Carefully record the size of each plant in a notebook.
