EQUIPMENT EM 327: MECHANICS OF MATERIALS LABORATORY 3 MTS START-UP PROCEDURE If the system has not already been started or has only been partially started, proceed with the following directions. 1. Turn water on for the pump. 2. Turn the computer on. 3. Login Guest Password guest 4. Turn Testar Controller on (switch is on the back (top) of the black box), and wait for the orange service light to go out. 5. Adjust the dimmer switch on the back of the Remote Station Control to view display. 6. Open the MTS Teststar icon. 7. Run (double click) on the System Loader icon. 8. Open the Station Manager icon. Select the File MTS.cfg Select the correct Parameter set for your experiment. 9. Open the MultiPurpose TestWare icon. Go to File > Open Open the Procedure file for your experiment You are now ready to follow the testing procedures for your experiment. EQUIPMENT EM 327: MECHANICS OF MATERIALS LABORATORY 4 MTS STATION MANAGER The Station Manager must be open in order to run the MultiPurpose TestWare. The Station Manager tells the TestStar Controller what type of equipment is being used and how it is calibrated. You will be using the Station Manager to adjust the set-point of the MTS cross-head, to offset the signals to zero and to view the output signals with the scope. (The scope is started-up using the fourth button from the right) Go to Adjust > Channels to bring-up the window used to adjust the Set Point/Span. You will have to click on the correct tab to see the Set Point indicator window. Note: Before you change the set-point be sure that nothing is in the grips between the cross-heads!!! To change the Set-Point, type in the correct value making sure that the units are correct. When you hit the 'enter' key, the cross-head will move to the value you typed in. If you are unable to change the set- point, check to make sure that the MultiPurpose Testware Control Panel is in the 'unlocked' mode. Scope EQUIPMENT EM 327: MECHANICS OF MATERIALS LABORATORY 7 MTS MULTIPURPOSE TESTWARE (MPT) The Multipurpose Testware is the software used to create test procedures and execute them using the MPT Control Panel. When you open the MPT window, you will have to go to File > Open and choose the procedure that goes with your experiment. The window will look similar to the one below. Notice that the 'Lock' (the first button from the right) is in the unlocked position or edit positon. In order to bring up the MPT Control Panel, you must click on the lock to place it in the locked or execute position. (Note: In order to use the manual control of the Control Pod or to change the Set Point in the Station Manager, you must have the MPT Control Panel unlocked.) In order to execute a test, you have to create a specimen. A specimen file corresponds to a data file. To create a specimen go to Tools > Specimen Editor. In the Specimen Editor window, in the upper left corner create a specimen name such as 'tens01'. Then change the Name Template in the lower right corner to correspond to 'tens'. To add more specimen files with the 'tens' nameplate just click on New in the lower left corner. To delete specimens once you have copied your data to your diskette, click on Delete in the lower left corner. The data files will be saved, unless otherwise specified, on the computer under: c:\em327data\'specimen name'\specimen.dat EQUIPMENT EM 327: MECHANICS OF MATERIALS LABORATORY 8 MTS MULTIPURPOSE TESTWARE The MPT Control Panel appears when the procedure is in execute mode. Before running the test, you must first chose a new Specimen for the data file. Next you need to turn the hydraulics on. (See the Control Pod instructions.) You should now have the hydraulics on and ready to go. If you want to view the output, start the scope (See Station Manager Instructions) To start the test, click on the 'Run' button. Operator Events may become active at this time. Be sure to read the Operator Events and follow the instructions. When the test is complete use the 'Stop' button to stop the cross-heads from moving. Do not use the 'Hold' button while taking data. The 'Hold' button only stops the cross-heads. You will still be taking data and possibly filling-up the buffer. EQUIPMENT EM 327: MECHANICS OF MATERIALS LABORATORY 9 MTS REMOTE STATION CONTROL The Remote Station Control pod can run the hydraulics, manually move the cross-head and digitally display the output signals. One of the most important features of the control pod is the Emergency Stop button.. If the cross-head is not performing correctly and can seriously damage something or someone, hit the Emergency Stop button immediately. This will turn off the hydraulics and stop the cross-head. (Note: There is an additional Emergency Stop button separate from the control pod which can be moved to any place of convenience.) If the Interlock light is on, you must push the reset button before you can start the hydraulics. To start the hydraulics: 1. Turn the HPS on LOW 2. Turn the HPS on HIGH 3. Turn the HSM on HIGH To stop the hydaulics 1. Turn the HSM OFF 2. Turn the HPS OFF To manually move the cross-head, you must Enable the manual command (make sure the MPT control panel is unlocked). The dial is velocity driven so the faster you turn it, the faster the cross-head moves. Note: In order to run the MPT test you must Disable manual control. There is a display on the remote control pad that indicates errors and shows the digital readout of the output channels. Note: When you are done with the equipment, turn the knob on the back on the control panel all the way to the off position to dim the display.
