Amanda Swain October 14, 2008 EDTC 100-F Philosophy of Education Essay Life-long learning simply means that you never stop learning. This is very important when it comes to being a teacher. A teacher must know and understand that technology, and many other things change over time and you must be able to overcome these changes when they become present. Teachers cannot effectively teach their students if they do not know how to work the software themselves. Students will also not learn if it is taught in a way that they do not come in contact with everyday. A perfect example of this is if a teacher were to try to teach from an overhead projector. Overhead projectors are simply not used anymore; they have been replaced by ordinary box video projectors, which hang from the ceiling or sit on a table. Life- long learning is very relevant in today’s society. Lately, it seems that technology changes daily. A teacher’s commitment to his/her classroom and students is very important in today’s society. If a teacher simply doesn’t show up to teach, her students will not care to show up for class either. They will feel the teacher does not care about their education. Teacher- student relationships are very important. If a student does not have a relationship with his/her teacher they will not feel they can discuss any problems they are having with learning the material from class. Students feed off of compliments. If a teacher tells a student his/her work is good, this will encourage the student to do better. A reflective practitioner continually evaluates the effects of his/her choices and actions on others. If a teacher sees that every student in his/her class fails a test they should reflect back on their teaching style. If they taught the material in a manner that the student understands then the student should have passed the test. This leaves the teacher with a decision to ask the students what they thought; or just keep teaching the same way and hope the students catch on. A teacher who runs their class room in a manner of trying to help the student further their education will have a much better success rate then a teacher who is just there for the pay check.
