ETH301 Six rights of the consumer Grantham University Six rights of the consumer Consumer Protections Laws protect consumers against businesses from unlawful or fraudulent acts against the public. These laws shield you, me and consumers from unethical practices taken by businesses. Knowledge between two parties to a transaction, it is less likely that one party can take advantage of the other. But consumers generally lack the knowledge and the commercial judgement to bargain effectively with businesses.[ CITATION Woo15 \l 1033 ] We as consumers have rights. I will discuss six out of 8 of the consumer rights. One of the consumer rights is the right to be heard. When it comes to this right, we as consumer should have the right to exercise our voices. If we feel mislead by a product or service, we have to our due diligence to make a complaint. There are many stores that have a customer service area where you can return defective products and advise them of your concerns. These customer service agents are there to offer effective solutions if things go wrong. Many businesses have very generous returns policies and understand the importance of keeping customers happy.[ CITATION Grana \l 1033 ] The second consumer right is the right to safety. Consumers have the right to be protected for hazardous purposes against products and services which can endanger you. For example, I tried purchasing an electric fireplace because I loved the modern look it gave and the fact that it provides. When checking out there was a warning message informing me that the product, I was purchasing can cause cancer and other illnesses when running the fireplace. I ended up not making this purchase and was happy to be informed of this safety concern. The third consumer right is the right to be informed. If we have questions regarding a product or services, we have the right to be informed through communication. I think this important because sometimes we might be mis-lead or misinformed by a product. There are businesses out there that put out false information so they can get a boost in sales. When purchasing a product that we are not familiar with we might want to know how it works and how this product would benefit you. If consumers have access to this information, then we as consumer can make well informed decisions and use the product the way its intended. The fourth consumer right is the right to choose. This right gives consumers different options when it comes to product. By having a variety of products to choose from it encourages competition and prevents monopolies. This right is great as you can see what companies offer as far as products or services at competitive prices. For instance, when purchasing a computer. You can do your research by seeing which computer will best fit your budget and needs. It pays to take time to make comparisons. This right is great because you are not limited to one store. The federal government has taken many steps to ensure the availability of a healthy environment open to competition through legislation.[ CITATION Con \l 1033 ] The fifth consumer right is the right to healthy environment. I think we can all relate to this as wanting to live and work a healthy environment. We want a clean and healthy environment, safe food and drugs, and fair business and employment practices. When it comes to the work environment the employer must have a clean workspace for employees to work in. Employers should also keep in mind the products that are used to clean as some of the products used to clean can be unsafe depending on the ingredients, which is why using green products are encouraged. When it comes to living a healthy environment, it is important because it increases the quality of life and years of healthy life for people. The sixth consumer right is the right to satisfaction of basic needs. People should have access to essential goods and services, healthcare and education. These basic needs are essential
