A quote from Pope Francis, “The great gift of life is the first gift we have received. Sometimes we risk forgetting about this, as if we were the masters of our existence while instead we are radically dependent. In fact, it is a source of great joy to hear that at every age in life, in every situation, in every social condition, we are and remain sons and daughters. This is the message that children give us with their presence: with just their presence, they remind us that each and every one of us is a child.” From reading this, I have come to the conclusion that not everyone is born into this world and if you are one of these people, you are very special. I’ve also gathered that humans should not waste away their lives by doing drugs or going towards suicide as God brung us into this world for a purpose and he wants us here and not to end life sooner then anticipated. God wants us on Earth and not one person should feel as if they should end their life earlier then when we are meant to die, naturally. Genesis 1:27 states “God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” Being made under God’s image is something we should not be taking for granted. The 5th commandment out of the 10 states “Thou shalt not kill.” Humans should not throw away not just God’s creation but the creations of an individual. These statements “The gift of life”, “to be created in God’s image” and “you shall not kill” can all be related to euthanasia as we are killing another person under God’s creation and also going against the 5th commandment previously stated as well as throwing away the gift of life. Personal Implications of Euthanasia: The Church believes humans should be respected. The Church’s key ethics of Human Dignity states “The Catholic tradition teaches that human dignity can be protected and a healthy community can be achieved only if human rights are protected and responsibilities are met. Therefore, every person has a fundamental right to life and a right to those things required for human decency.” In simpler terms this means to respect everyone but when this statement is related to Euthanasia the Church’s key ethics of life says we should not help a person to take their own life. I think this is right only to a degree. I believe that humans should have the right to make the call on if they are suffering and in enough pain to get their life put to an end. I feel this is right but only if the person has done everything humanly possible to cure their pain and suffering. With this, I still believe that Euthanasia can be classifed as assisted suicide and even in some cases murder but sometimes a humans will to live and wellbeing can be challenged by pain and this is a important matter to take into consideration. Political Implications of Euthanasia: New Zealand will be putting forth the Euthanasia bill in 2020 for public to decide weither it should be legalised or not. However, the abortion bill has been passed recently on the 18th of March, 2020. These bills are very much similar to each other, in the eyes of the church, one is the murder of an unborn child. The Church believes that it should not matter what your life is like, everyone deserves a chance at life as we are all made in the image and likeness of God. The euthanasia bill is very similar to the abortion bill in a way but instead of ending ones life at the start of it, it is getting someone to kill you when you are struggling and suffering near the end of your life. The Church’s opinion is the exact same on this matter of them thinking everyone deserves a chance at life as we are all gifts of God. The Euthanasia bill is still up for discussion as it has still not been decided, morally I believe this bill should be passed through as everyone should have that decision when you are in pain and believe there is no point on continuing suffering when a person believes there is no point to go on. Ethically, it is wrong to murder but if it is with consent and in a peaceful manner on what the person being euthanised is happy with, it should be alright.
