The key figures and their contributions to the development of the theory of evolution. Charles darwin is credited with the theory of evolution through natural selection, inspired by his research during his voyage on hms beagle. Charles lyell noted the dynamic geological nature of the earth, and his work influenced darwin's thinking. Jean-baptiste de lamarck proposed the idea of 'descent with modification' through the inheritance of acquired characteristics. Georges cuvier provided evidence of extinction of species through his examination of fossil-laden rocks. Alfred russel wallace independently proposed the theory of natural selection, leading darwin to publish his own theory.

TERM 4 Georges Curvier DEFINITION 4 in examining the fossil-laden rockes of the Paris Basin early in the 19th century, provided conclusive evidence of the extinction of species on earth. TERM 5 Alfred Russel Wallace DEFINITION 5 independently proposed theory of natural selection, which prompted Darwin to publish his own theory.
